ipod connected to BMW adapter is frozen

Has anybody seen a similar issue with their ipod. I have a 5th gen 80 gig ipod hooked up to a dealer installed BMW ipod adapter. More and more often my ipod will freeze up, which means you cannot change songs or playlists using car controls, and when disconnected from the car, the ipod will not turn off without manually resetting it. It will just sit there with the bmw screen until the battery runs down. I have restored the ipod each time this is happened, which is 5 or 6 times. It is getting really annoying.

I have exactly the same problem. I bought a new 2008 BMW 335i in late July, and it has the BMW iPod adapter pre-installed by the dealer. Once every couple of days, the iPod stops working and the car stereo no longer sees it. When I unplug it from the car, it is on, showing locked and paused, but I can't unlock it or get it to do anything. Manual reboot is also unsuccessful, so for hours I just have to wait for it to unfreese or be ready to manually reboot again. I've never seen an iPod be so frozen that it won't manually reboot (lock, unlock a few times, hold down center and menu buttons together until reboot occurs).

Please help!

Similar story on my 2004 BMW 325XIT with dealer installed iPod adpater (in April 2007). I used it for a long time with my Video iPod 30GB. Recently it locks up after just a few days of being connected. It used stay in the car for weeks with never a problem.

Before the above problem started to happen, back in March I bought a used second generation iPod Nano to just leave in the car. I was worried about summer heat on the disk drive. The Nano worked for a couple of months before it began the lockup game. Now, once I completely clear it, it may work for 2 or 3 days in the car before going nuts. I need to drain the battery and reset before it works well, for a few days.

I went back to using the Video iPod and it started doing it and it is doing it more frequently. I get maybe 3 days out of it. I used to leave it for days or weeks. It seems it is not safe to leave them connected for more than a day or two.

I wanted to avoid bothering with it at all other than occasional re-syncs.

Yes, it is really annoying.

Is it the car or the iPods? My bet is the iPods.

I am typing from my laptop now, as I was just typing a response when my iphone's safari browser crashed....just a little disclaimer, and perhaps setting the mood for the rest of my post. Here we go:
I have the same exact issue with my brand new 120GB ipod classic!! Mine freezes DAILY! Randomly, when I advance to the next song, it just stays at 0:00 and does not play the song. If I look at the ipod, it has the play icon, so it is not paused accidently. Then magically after about 15 secs, it advances to the next track and freezes there for another 15 secs and so on until I pull out the iPod and reset it. This happens on my 08 535i and also on my wife's 335i cpe. This used to happen with my old 2GB iPod Nano on my Z4, but I had thought it was my Z4. Note that I have had an iPhone since the first day it came out, and now I have a iPhone 3G, and none of these have ever frozen on me in my cars. Is this just a hard drive thing?? I am only 2 weeks away from not being able to return it for the full refund and would not have even asked for it for Christmas had there been a 32GB iphone. I don't really want to return it. Please Apple help us out. I know this can't only be a BMW related issue. I have seen the same problems on the Lexus forums. Now that i just upgraded my library to DRM-free files, I can now put my songs on a cheap portable hard drive and the BMW's will read the unprotected M4A files via the USB plug. I don't want to resort to this due to me having to maintain two different libraries, but it sure beats the **** out of unplugging and reseting my ipod while driving everyday. Why hasn't apple support responded yet????

I've had the same thing happen to me, except not from plugging it into a BMW.

In fact, this has happened to me a couple of times when I try to properly eject it from my computer. I'll click "eject" and wait for the "Do Not Disconnect" screen to disappear, only it won't. And no amount of button-pressing or reseting or plug-in-and-unplug-it will get it out of it's seizure. Just wait for the battery to die, then try again.

So does anyone here know of a hard drive MP3 player that's Mac-compatible and has nowhere near as many glitches?

Exact same problem here, but I think I may have at least narrowed it down. Mine, on occasion, will be playing along and then when I go to switch tracks the counter moves on my radio display but the song stays the same. If I try to switch playlists, e.g., go from BMW1 to BMW2, the same song stays on but the track number is replaced by "TR" and then it keeps displaying "CD CHECK" every few seconds. Only way to get back out is to pop the iPod out of the connector and do a hard reset. But, here's where I think I may have narrowed it down - it only does this on songs that I've downloaded from iTunes, not songs I uploaded from my CDs. Has anyone seen the same issue, particularly with only songs downloaded vs. songs uploaded from CDs?
