Error - 1603 on installation of itunes and quicktime

Ive read and trouble shot various threads in this... heres my problem

I tried installing, and it didnt work... after that i tried uninstalling both itunes and quicktime, the itunes never showed up in my add/remove section... using the windows install clean up and this took off the itunes... im assuming. ok after that i tried deleting everything from quicktime. I did the add/remove and took it off. Now im trying to install quicktime and the installer wont even start, when it does start it gets about 80% done and then gives me the 1603 message. Same scenerio with Itunes. I am installing from the desktop not from the internet.

heres what the message reads.

Error - 1603 Fatal Error During Installation
Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information

I put off so much work to try to get this fixed... i need some assistance.

thanks in advance.

hi Mark!

hmmm. have you recently installed an MS Security Hotfix? that produces a 1607, but it is probably still worth checking up on:

Matt Bennett1, "iTunes 6 - Error 1607 - Solution", 11:01am Oct 18, 2005 CDT

the InstallShield advice on the 1603 is also worth checking up on if you're getting a "standalone" 1603:

http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111019

the InstallShield Tips and Pointers might also be helpful:

well i think i see the problem but i dont know how to correct it... i follow the instructions given to me in both the installshield and the matt bennett solution... but i seem to be missing files and folders. Either that or i dont know what the **** im doing... anyhow, on http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q111019

I dont have the folder "local users and groups" which i need to allow administrative privileges. what can i do?

on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909444 im not sure what they want me to do... i went into c:\windows ... then clicked on registration but the folder of "everyone" "system" and "administrators" is nowhere to be found?

im not too computer saavy so ill need to get it dumbed down a notch... am i doing something wrong here?

I have exactly the same problem as Mark Sanchez. I select Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management , but when I open System Tools, there are all the items described EXCEPT Local Users and Groups. It would be nice to know why, although I don’t actually think that Administrative Privileges is my problem.

Hence, I tried to follow Matt Bennett’s lead regarding Error -1607, hoping that this would also resolve Error –1603
This took me to the Microsoft Help and Support facility, dealing with the topic entitled:
Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the %windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC
After many days locked in mortal combat with iTunes versions 5 and 6, I am getting quite courageous at typing in “Regedit”, and blundering about in the Registry, armed with little other than pig ignorance, and printed guidance notes from this discussion group. However, courage is not enough, and I cannot for the life of me find the %windir%/registration folder that I am supposed to edit. Can someone please tell me where it is.

I’m loath to give up on this one, but I wonder whether Claire Ponting may have come up with the pragmatic solution, by doing a System Restore to a point prior to the Windows upgrade, and then Installing iTunes.

Of course, we will have to rebuff Microsoft’s exhortation to do an important upgrade until after the installation, and we will only have achieved a short-term fix, because if we ever have to install an iTunes Version 7, we will presumably re-encounter the problem.

Furthermore, I bet I still hit a wall during the installation of Quicktime 7, and have to follow other threads to do battle with Registry settings.

I think I may give it a try when I have put an ice pack on my head, and had a good rest.

Just to let you know that I’ve tried it. After restoring to 15 October, and uninstalling everything that I could manage to uninstall, I’m still in a mess.

Got “Error 1905.Module D:\Program Files\iTunes\ITDetector.ocx failed to unregister. HRESULT-2147220472 Contact your support personnel.”

(In case you’re puzzled by the D:, that’s the drive onto which I elected to save the files.)

To my surprise (and encouragement), the installation beavered away again after that, until it came to the familiar “QuickTime installation failed: Error Code: -3”. Then my spirits were lifted when an iTunes + QuickTime window announced: “Installation Successful. Setup has completed installing iTunes and QuickTime.”

I clicked on Finish, then double-clicked on the iTunes icon on my Desktop, and got “QuickTime Version 6.5.2 is installed, iTunes requires QuickTime version 7.0.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes”. I’ve been there before, with Version 5 that I never got to work, so I’ll have to search the threads again for that one.

It’s like fighting in quicksand. You drag yourself part way to the edge, before being pulled back in again.

I think you're making progress here. the "need later version" problems are trickier than some of the other QT ones, but i've been having some success with this technique:

Hello everybody,
I have exactly the same problem as Mark and Paul, both with QT7 install and itunes install but it turned a bit differently.

Before having the -1603 error, I had, for each of the both installs (QT & itunes), a registry error "impossible to open the HKEY LOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes....."

I did all was possible, at least to me(delete temp files, uninstall all QT & itunes applications, run Windows Installer Cleaner ...), and I finally manage to install QT V7 but the error still remains for itunes !

Like Paul, I can't find the select Local Users and Groups under
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > System Tools

I tried the "%windir%\registration" solution but after opening the folder , I don't know what to do !!??!!
I've got an empty "CRMLog" folder, a "{02D4B3F1-FD88-11D1-960D-00805FC79235}.{E6259674-0B1E-4459-893A-8BC3F8707995}. crmlog file, a R00000000000b and a R00000000000c files.
What should I try with those files, pleeeeaaaase ? Helpppp : I'm not THAT good !

PS A may be useful precision : this occurs with an old version of itunes (V5, I think)

PS2 : in the register at "HKEY LOCALMACHINE\Software\Classes\.cdda\OpenWithProgids", I have a iTunes.cdda file --> should I try and delete it ?

Thanks in advance
Marie

Hi b noir

I was greatly encouraged when I got back on my machine today and picked up on your comment that you think I’m making progress. However, before trying to get any further, I would appreciate your thoughts on a couple of points.

Your advice to Marc Ores in the thread, to which you referred me, begins with “first sweep by Windows Update to make sure you're fully up-to-date in that regard.” I know that this is standard practice before doing any download, but you may recall that my partially successful approach began with a reset to 15 October, in order to avoid the recently reported iTunes problems associated with the latest Windows critical update. I am therefore inclined to ignore that part of your recommendation in this instance, until I’m up and running. What do you think?

Secondly, you will recall that the full failure message relating to QT states “QuickTime Version 6.5.2 is installed, iTunes requires QuickTime version 7.0.3 or later. Please reinstall iTunes”. If I manage a successful standalone download of QT, do you think I will still need to reinstall iTunes as stated in the message? It’s just that I think I’ve installed the iTunes part of the equation successfully, and I couldn’t bear to re-install it, only to find that I’ve opened another can of worms.

good point ... since we're worried about a specific hotfix in your case, i don't think you should get
b that
one again. Matt gives the KB number for the one in question in his post:

experience says "usually not". let's check to see if everything is working again after the standalone install. we'll only contemplate an itunes reinstall if that QT 7.0.3 is working fine, and we're still not getting a proper response from itunes.

keep us posted.

just checking on some things here before we proceed. (it's possible that you might have a slightly different problem from the lads.)

are you getting error message numbers with those messages? are they 1402s or 1406s? or are they just "naked" errors?

(this is going to sound like a broken record) are you running Norton Internet Security 2005? we've had some reports of that refusing to let people edit registry keys in this sort of context ...

Hi b

I've done everything as agreed, and have successfully downloaded the QT Installer to hard drive by the stand-alone route, but when I try to run it, I'm back to dear old -1603. However, -1603 being a generic, machine-specific error, I found he detail of the message interesting, in that it referred to permissions for QuickTime Updater.exe

It’s a bit depressing that it should even think in terms of an Updater since, in addition to Add and Remove Programs, I had done a search for all things QuickTime, cancelled any Read Only attributes, and had hand-deleted everything that my computer would let me. In other words the installer should not have known that I had ever had an earlier version.

I’m off back into the bowels of the Registry now, to try to reset the relevant permission, so if I’m not back in 2 days, please send out a search party.

Oct 22, 2005 10:35 AM in response to mark sanchez

Hi b

It’s me again. I went into the Apple Computer Inc. section of the Registry, and granted myself permission to go further, but there’s no “Quicktime” in there. Come to think of it, there was no + sign against the Apple Computer Inc file.
I’m starting to think that I may have to rerun the iTunes Installer. Any thoughts before I do so, and will I have to try to uninstall the iTunes program that I successfully installed yesterday?

Paul
