eMac 10.2.4 version?

Hello! I am wanting to update my G3 to OS 10.2.4 and have found an ebay listing for a new eMac install and update disc and also for 9.2. I have no idea if this would be legal to run on my G3. Any one have any idea? I want to stay on the legal side of Apple! Thanks!

Hello Gail,

"I want to stay on the legal side of Apple!"

Good for you! It's refreshing to hear someone concerned about the licensing of softwares as so many try to circumvent it whenever possible.

"found an ebay listing for a new eMac install and update disc and also for 9.2."

Not seeing the seller's listing and description, I can only surmise that they are machine specific disks and should not be used on your G3.

If you could post back with your exact model of G3 I could recommend more precisely what you might want to upgrade to but I certainly would recommend upgrading to Panther or Tiger, if your system specs allow.

You can check for your model on EveryMac.com. It's a great resource for info about your model's specifications and even states the maximum OS that it is upgradable to.

You also can check on FastMac.com for retail install disks. If searching ebay, search for "retail 10.2 install disks" and see what you come up with. Of course substitute "10.3" or "10.4" if that is what you are looking for.

Also, do you need OS 9 disks? Does your machine have it's original install disks?

Post back with further info and comments or questions,

Thanks! I have a B/W G3 that I use with my Agfa scanner so I am needing to run OSX 10 and 9 for my scanner. I questioned the seller and they stated: "Though labeled eMac the OS X 10.2 Panther contains universal install of OS X 10.2. The item will work perfectly for your computer so as long as you meet the requirements of Jaguar. Everything is legit. We purchase hundreds of computer everyday to be broken down as parts and we comply to license and agreement of the software. " I actually went ahead and bought the software because it was stated as "new Software Apple Mac OS X 10.2.8 Jaguar Full Install DVD" so I assumed I was buying the retail version, and when it arrived it was the emac discs.

Hi again Gail,

I have seen the eMac disks being sold as universal install disks, though quite frankly, I don't know how legit it is to install them on anything other than an eMac. Apparently these will install on older iMac G3 etc. but I can't believe it is in accordance with the license to install them on a machine like yours. Perhaps I am wrong and someone can correct me here but I think that is correct.

Full retail disks will not say a computer model name printed on them.

Check the completed listings on ebay by searching completed for the search term "10.2 Jaguar retail" and you will see what the full retail disk set should look like.

What OS are you running currently on the B/W G3?

Gail,

I also wanted to make sure you were aware of the fact that your G3 B/W will most likely need the firmware updated before installing 10.2.

See: Mac OS X: List of available firmware updates

I believe you will need to upgrade to OS 9.1-9.2 and then apply the firmware update before upgrading to OS 10.2. You can upgrade from 8.6 to a retail copy of 9 and then update to 9.1 or 9.2 through Apple Downloads.

"Hopefully, someone can give us some concrete guidance on this"

If you are referring to the legality of installing machine specific disks on another computer than what they are intended for, I am sure it is against the license agreement. These resellers will tell you that they will work on the machine other than the eMac model but I'm sure it is against the license agreement to do so.
