eliminating header on subsequent pages

I am creating a newsletter without the template and have created a header I only want on page one, but no matter what I do the header appears on all pages. If I delete it from the other pages it automatically is deleted on page one.

Welcome to Apple Discussions

Since you only want a header on page one, why not use a text box? Or insert a section break after page one &, with your cursor in the body of page 2, uncheck Use previous headers & footers in the section tab of the layout inspector. Actually, headers & footers are designed for repeating data on each page & it is possible to suppress it on the first OR the remaining pages (in the section), but I prefer a text box for just the first page.

Agreed. But sometimes more experienced users have to guess at the intent of the less experienced, and not assume that their question/explanation is worded the way we might. I'm guessing that ellie12 did not so much create a header as fill in an existing one, and simply doesn't want that text appearing on subequent pages.

That being said, I did fail to notice that the document was a newsletter. Assuming it's page layout, my suggestion was of no use, as each page is its own section, and you cannot set *First page is different*.

What one can do in page layout, though, is uncheck *Use previous headers and footers* on the second page, and achieve the same effect. Peggy suggested the same thing, but I think, like me, was assuming WP instead of PL, which has no body text. It's sufficient to simply select a section in the thumbnail (Pages) view to be able to adjust its configuration in the inspector.

Michael,

More shocking news: it can get harder than this! Really though, if you think back to when you began to use MS Word, did any of this stuff seem easy at the time 🙂

After you have completed this exercise, you will know how to insert a Section Break and how to use the Inspector to control some aspects of header and footer behavior in your document.

Begin with a new Blank Word Processing Document, then:

1. View > Show Rulers

2. View > Show Layout

3. View > Show Invisibles

4. View > Zoom > Fit Page

5. View > Show Inspector

This is your starting point. If any of the options above were unavailable, they were already activated.

Now take some time and study what you see in your Pages document window. On the outside you have your Rulers that will show the location of margins and tabs. Then there is a thin gray border indicating your table top. Next is a white rectangle which is your "paper". On your paper will be three outlines, for Header, Text Frame and Footer. At the top of the pages window you see the Filename ("Untitled" until you save your work), followed by the words "Word Processing". Somewhere on your screen will be a movable floating panel called the Inspector.

Keeping all those things in view will make the tips you read in these discussions easier to follow.

6. Position your cursor in the Text Frame by clicking there, and type a line of text followed by a Return.

7. Insert > Section Break. Your cursor will jump to the top of the second page.

8. Type a line of text on this new page.

9. Scroll back to the first page, click in your Header Field and type some text.

10. Note that your header text is repeated on the second page.

11. Click in the text you entered on the second page.

12. Locate your Inspector and navigate to the Section tab on the Layout Page and click the box for Configuration > First Page is Different. Your Inspector will now look like this:

User uploaded file

13. After you click the First Page is Different box, your second page header will be blank and you can enter new text there, or not. Your first page header will not be affected.

Keep in mind that your document appearance controls are in the View Menu, and that virtually all of the document control options are somewhere in the Inspector.

Good luck,

Jerry

Hello Michael

You may do what you want but not using header and footer.
Enter Inspector > Document

set the height of the header to zero then, uncheck header

set the height of the footer to zero then, uncheck footer

Now your document is free of header and footer.

At the top of your first page, insert a text box in which you will enter your name
At the bottom of this first page insert a text box in which you will enter you contact info.

Define the margins to fit your needs.

Select the "name" block,
Inspector > Wrap
Check the box "Object causes wrap"
and click the rightmost icon
Same thing with thae "contact" block.

If I understood well this doc will behave exactly as you wished.

Just because, when I read:

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create a simple letter stationary
where I have my name at the top of the first page ONLY...
and my contact info at the bottom of the first page ONLY.

I think that OPs are able to apply the Help or the User Guide (when they read them) so, when they ask such a question, I always assumes that the available protocol doesn't fit their needs.

Contrarily to what some posters wrote (not you), I bet on the intelligence of the posters. I think that they are able to apply what is explained.

At this time, you have a header on every pages.

Remove it completely.
Starting from the very beginning of your document type what you wanted to be in the page1 header.

After that, adjust the vertical position of the first line of the main text.

I think this discussion is sidling around the main point which is that for a business user, who likes to write documents with a heading page, they have become used to the simplicity of other applications which allow you to make a template which has company information in the first page header and footer (as I have in Mellel) but allows you to revert to blank headers and footers in subsequent pages, which you can use as a place for page numbers or page count or sub headings etc etc. It is seen from the advice offered that you can "get around" this failing of Pages by saying that the 1st page is different but, if your first page header is bulky you do not get that space back in the body and all subsequent pages begin part way down the page, which looks stupid and wastes paper. This is a fundamental feature of any good word processing application and its absence causes much gnashing of teeth when someone here needs to create a document of this type. The other workaround which suggests using a text box does not work either. If you want to have a small header recurring on all pages, heading or not, you cannot adjust the top margin enough. I have it set to 0.59" but it will not actually reduce in LAYOUT to less that 1.04". It seems that you cannot eliminate the header altogether on the first page if you need it on subsequent pages and you cannot creep the text box close to the header, so you end up with the body starting well down the first page. It is very poor, which is a shame, because the look of Pages is very neat and suggests it should be easy to work with. I shall just continue to use Mellel in the expectation that Apple will get around to fixing it one day but I am not holding my breath.

Someone mentioned using their version of Pages to read their old AppleWorks documents and I admit this was one of the reasons for buying a number of copies of iWork, as we have loads of files created in AW which we cannot open, except as generic text files. So imagine my disappointment when I found that Pages cannot open our AW files. I thought that Apple would manage to arrange for Pages to open any version of AW but clearly I was being foolish. When I read about the workaround I had to laugh, albeit slightly hysterically. If anyone knows of a converter I shall be delighted to hear about it but, again, not holding my breath.

A screenshot to illustrate what I wrote.

The main text uses the margins.
The header has a yellow background to make it visible.

As I set page 1 different than other pages, there is no page number in the first header.
I inserted a text block with a grey background.

You may see that it is not restricted by the margins, and it is no more restricted by the header.

I will switch off to listen "Freedom now. We insist!" by Max Roach.

I don't see a section tab in the layout inspector. I'm assuming this is the Inspector, shown next to Media. I tried inserting a section break and I tried inserting a page break, so that i could attempt to eliminate either one or both.

If I send my document as is to my instructor, that second page is not going to be welcome. Any other suggestions? the document is written and complete, so I'd rather not go entering text boxes, etc.

Thank you.

Hello Bekins

May I recall that the question was:

I am creating a newsletter without the template and have created a header I only want on page one, but no matter what I do the header appears on all pages.

Having a _blank header_ is definitely not the same thing than having _no header_ 😉

I hope that the OP will give a more precise description of what he wanted.

As you understood, i read the question as: may I have a header in page 1 and no header at all in other pages.
I think that it's the way Peggy understood which responded: put your page1's "header" in a text block and remove header from other pages.

But after all, maybe you are right. I am accustomed to messages where the main problem is not to respond to the question but to guess what is the true question 😉

Forgive me but I am a bit shocked by the content of this thread...
I have been on a Mac for the last 18 years due to more than anything else... ease of use.
Probably similar to other confused folks here...I desperately want to retire MSWord
and use Pages exclusively and...
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to create a simple letter stationary
where I have my name at the top of the first page ONLY...
and my contact info at the bottom of the first page ONLY.

I have tried to to follow the instructions given in this thread but when I try to use either previous header and footer tip or the first page is different tip I don't get the desired result.
I also find text boxes really hard to position in the way that I want them.

I have the sense that I am NOT an isolated incident.
Could somebody step this out in a way a six year old could make sense of it?
I am sure if you are a pro at using word processing the tips listed so far must be child's play.
But not to me.
Thanks!
