Remote app can't connect to my iTunes library

I'm running iTunes 7.7 on my Windows XP Pro SP3 PC. I'm using Windows firewall and I connect to my wireless network via a US Robotics DSL modem/router. I installed the 2.0 firmware upgrade on my iPod touch and installed the Remote app.

When I try to connect my iPod to iTunes as a remote, iTunes finds the iPod as a device and the iPod gives me the 4-digit code to enter. I enter the code on iTunes. I get the "Verifying Remote passcode" message in iTunes, and then... nothing happens.

I tried switching off the firewall, connecting the PC to the network using WAN and/or LAN, restarting the PC and iPod and still the same results.

Could anyone help me with this? I'd appreciate it.

PC, Windows XP Pro, winxp pro sp3

I managed to get mine working. The key for me was the Network proxy settings, but here's my entire setup:

These instructions are for OS X, but should have comparable settings in Windows.

_iTunes preferences:_
"*Look for iPhone and iPod touch Remotes*" enabled

"*Share my music*", with "*Require Password*"
I don't think you need either of these settings. However, I mention them here since some people have suggested that you cannot share your library with a password while using Remote.

_System Preferences:_
Security/Firewall set to "*Set access for specific services and applications*", with iTunes added. Use TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 if you are using another firewall. See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1741

Network/Proxy "*Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts and Domains*".
This was my problem that prevented one of my computers from connecting to Remote. If you have a proxy server, ensure that your local area network is included in this bypass list. For example, if your computer IP Addresses look like 10.0.1.7, 10.0.1.1, 10.0.1.3, etc., you could add 10.0.1.* (you can also use notation like 10.0/16, if you understand it). Without this, your iTunes host will try to access the Remote application via your proxy, and will likely fail or connect intermittently.

Good Luck!

I seemed to have the same problem but using a Mac rather than Windows

The things that seemed to fix it for me were:
- setting my iTunes settings to share my music library
- adjusting my proxy settings to not use my web proxy for local addresses (my iPod was getting a local address on my home network)

then the passcode was accepted in Itunes for my iPod to act as a remote and allow me to access my iTunes library on my MacBook Pro from the iPod touch

Yeah, I'm having the same problem, except iTunes doesn't even acknowledge that my device exists. They are (so far as I know) on the same wifi network, but are not linking up. I kept struggling to figure out why this was, and have had no luck. It is possible that they are not on the same network, I guess, but that doesn't seem likely to me. Do y'all know of any other possible problems that would prevent my computer from recognizing the iPod via the wifi network?

My setup: iPod Touch with 2.1 firmware, WinXP SP3, iTunes 8.0.1.1, Remote 1.1.1. I use a proxy server to get to the web on port 8081, and also use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 as my firewall (although I just noticed that my Windows Firewall is also enabled, don't know why). TCP 3689 and UDP 5353 are enabled for all inbound/outbound connections in Kaspersky. I have the correct settings in iTunes (look for remotes). When I launch Remote from the Touch, it immediately appears in iTunes and asks me for the 4-digit code. I enter the code that appeared on the iPod, and then it just spins and spins and spins, finally conks out. I've tried rebooting, also uninstalling/reinstalling Bonjour, as well as Remote itself. Still no go. Any and all assistance would be GREATLY appreciated; I'm pretty sure this was working a while back (before updating Remote software). Thanks

The only thing I would suggest is this:

In my proxy settings (using a Mac) I have to tell it to not use the proxy (from the ISP) for local sites e.g. anything with 10.0.1.* ... both my MacBook Pro and the iPod touch get local addresses on my home network and after I changed this setting it seemed to allow the connection ... before that I would enter the code and nothing would happen (as you've described). I also checked the other settings you mentioned e.g. that ITunes is set up to share the library and the firewall on my MacBook Pro

Hope this helps, good luck 🙂

Hi, here's a suggestion to check if the IPod and your computer are on the same network.

On the iPod Touch go to "Settings" and then "Wi-Fi" - the network name should be shown. If you then click the blue > sign on the right of the network name it should show you the IP address settings. On mine I can see I am on the same network as my laptop and that I have an IP address allocated by my router (a Mac Airport Extreme)

Same on your computer (assuming it is a Mac) - go to System Preferences, Network and check the settings...

At least you will know if they are on the same network or not. Let me know and there might be something else to try 🙂

Hi,

I just got an ipod touch and I've been trying to setup the remote app since last night. Here's a little overview of my current home network. The problem I've been having is adding it using the macbook connected to the wireless network, but if I connect the ethernet cable to a port on the wireless router, it mysteriously works.

I don't have a proxy on my network, I even tried connecting the ipod without internet access (DSL router disconnected) and it doesn't seem to be working. It just hangs after about a minute of inactivity.

Any ideas?

I have been looking at threads about this topic for a while now, and unfortunately none of the suggestions i have read thus far have helped.
My computer (ip: 192.168.0.117) is running vista wirelessly connected to router (ip:192.168.0.1) My itouch is connected to the same network (ip:192.168.0.130) I have checked all the right boxes in my itunes preferences. I disabled firewall to ensure that it wont block anything. I am running the latest of both itunes and itouch software.

I'm sure i must be missing something because it isnt working. my itouch never even appears in the itunes side bar for me to encounter some of the other issues i have heard of.
This app has rave reviews, I just wish i could get it up and running for myself.

I am trying to connect my iPod touch 2G to my iTunes library on my MacBook, which is currently on my university's wireless network. I've done as suggested, Glenn, and the IPs are different between my iPod touch and MacBook. The network name is the same, but I guess the IP address issue is my problem for not getting my iPod touch 2G to connect to my library.

Any ideas on this type of situation?

I think I've solved the problem on my computer. It seems that the Mac works VERY badly with multiple addresses. I've removed all extra IP interfaces sniffed the network. I found out iTunes was getting requests in IPv4 and replying in IPv6. I've disabled IPv6 in Network->Advanced->Disable... and it suddenly worked. Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Yuval.

OK well I'm connecting to the web from my Windows Vista PC through an anonymous proxy server. I'm not sure where you are finding Network>Advanced>Disable, I don't see those options on my iPod Touch OR in iTunes. Are you using an iPhone or an iTouch, and where are you finding that menu option specifically? If I'm connecting to the web through the iTouch without having to enter my proxy info, do you think I still need to enter the proxy info in order for this to work? Thanks so much.
