New to FCE from Sony's Vegas - Keyframe question - Video Generator - Text

Hello All

Well, I came over from 13 years on PC and 6 years of Sony's Vegas Pro. So please forgive me if I don't know much MAC Speak yet! Just bought a new MacBookPro and FCE.

I decided to jump right in to get my feet wet while I'm waiting for Tom Wolsky's Book FCE 4 Editing Workshop to arrive from Amazon. Was able to get some clips on the timeline and do a few things following the video tuts at Apple's site. Bought QT pro for my internet PC so I could DL and watch the videos as I work. Network is 2 PC's + my MBP.

Question is; I got my video on V1, and black box on V2 (we called it generated media in Vegas) and V3 has a little yellow number (text). I do tehnical training videos as well as Tourist DVD's and Legal Video work.

In Vegas we could set keyframes at either the timeline level (track motion) or event level (event pan/crop).

A; I have to put little numbers in little black boxes to overlay on the video to label varioous items in the videos. First thing I did was went to "Effects" "Shapes" "Rectangle". HA! Now I don't remember how I sized it and placed it but is there a way to unlock an aspect ratio as I sometimes need to size the box and keeping an aspect ratio prevents me from accuratly sizing the box. I then moved it into position.

V3 has the Text.

Can I copy the fist black box and paste it down the line on the same track? (In Vegas we just held the CTRL key and dragged to copy) I tried holding the option key and it copied it but also split the video in V1!

B When I keyframe an item, is it for that item only or at the track level? If it's at the track level then I'd have to reset the keyframe after every event so I can resize the next one.

These black boxes and numbers don't move. So maybe keyframing is not the riht term. Once I set them they stay put. I may have hundreds of them in a video.

Also when placing these items, in Vegas I could put them on any track above the video. Sometimes I'd have them directly above each other. So maybe I have a set on V2-3 and another set on V4-5. They won't affect each other will they? Each will still show up in the video?

C; Okay I want to copy the little set (v-2 and v-3) together and paste them elsewhere. I tried every combination to select both tracks and copy but it doesn't work. How can I select multiple items on multiple tracks and copy/paste?

Thanks much
Allen

Hi I tried to edit my message above but couldn't figure out how to get the changed message back into the thread.

Anyway Here's 2 links to screenshots I put up to show what I'm talking about;

Don't use the rectangle. You'll have more control and it's easier to render if you use a color matte. How long do you need it to be? 60 minutes? Set the duration before you put it in the timeline. Use the crop function/tool to make the color matte the shape and size you want.

A keyframe is for an object, video, graphics, audio. It is not an envelope keyframe for the whole track.

If you copy items on multiple tracks the application will pate them, by default, onto the same tracks they came from. You have to use the autoselect buttons to assign different tracks if that's what you want. I have never seen the copy and paste function fail, so perhaps you're not doing it correctly, or there is something unusual about the items you're copying and pasting.

Hi Tom
Thanks. No, the particular elements I'm refering to are only on the video for 1-2 seconds. Since my work becomes a Multimedia CD-ROM (MPEG-1) ultimately, folks can pause or stop the video to see the labels.

The only thing that goes the entire video length is the "watermark" Something like a TV station logo but blended into the video, not colored. That I already have as a PNG file I made in Photoshop Elements. It's transparent. But for me and FCE I figure that's too advanced for me to get into just now. Right now I'm 'playing around' with FCE trying to get a feel of things and learn it.

What I'm trying to copy is 2 events, 5 seconds long, each on a different track. 1 event on V2 and 1 on V3. That would save me the trouble of resizing a new black box and formatting the text again where all I have to do is chenge the test and re-position both events. I'd paste them either on the same 2 tracks or new tracks depending on where I needed to put them. If you look at the screenshot links I gave, you'll see exactly what it is I'm trying to learn in FCE. Actually I'd really like to 'lock' those 2 events together if that's possible. In Vegas I could "group" them together.

I'll look into using a color matte then.
Thanks
Allen

I see no reason why copy and paste does not function for you. It works if done properly. Not sure what you're doing that prevents it from happening.

There is no group function in FCE. You could make a sequence, place the elements you want to combine in the sequence, and then put the nested sequence in the master. I don't think it will give you any great benefit in what you're describing.
