Windows XP (SP3) laptop - sees Airport Extreme, won't connect

I am using an older (2003) Toshiba Satellite laptop that is running Windows XP with Service Pack 3. I had been using a Linksys G router and adapter for years with no problem, but we recently upgraded to a Time Capsule for Wireless-N. We're using WPA/WPA2 Personal security. My wife's Macbook Pro connects with no problems at all.

The laptop will connect when the network is unsecured, but it won't connect with WPA security. I see the network under the "Choose a wireless network" choice, I can double-click it, I enter the password, and it then thinks for about a minute. After that, it just stops with no message at all, and I'm still not connected. I updated the drivers to no avail, and the card (Linksys WPC54G) specs say it supports WPA. Any idea what the problem might be?

Check out the following iFelix article to see if it will help: Problems connecting an XP PC to an Airport Base Station. Although it is written for connecting to an AirPort Base Station, it will apply equally as well for the Time Capsule.

I had already gone through that document, and none of those items were the problem. HOWEVER! While checking the IEEE authentication, I noticed that there was a pulldown menu under the "Association" tab of the Properties window - my encryption was set to AES, and when I changed it to TKIP I got on no problem!

Good find! AES encryption is typically associated with WPA2 only while TKIP can be used for either WPA or WPA2.

Found it! Worked right away. View Wireless Networks - Select network -Advanced Settings (on left) find name of nework in list - Properties -- look for AES and change it to TPIK. Easy as pie.

I am also have problems connecting my toshiba satellite with the airport, even though I am able to connect to other security enabled networks.

Hey. I'm using Windows XP SP3 too and I'm having the exact same problem. It connects on my Vista laptop but it doesn't work on my XP one. It sees it but won't connect. Same as everyone else.

I have done what you guys said and set it as tkip but it still doesn't work. Any ideas why?

Ahhh. Fixed this. It needs to be WPA-PSK now WPA2-PSK.
