I just bought my MacBook a month ago and it's already having a few problems. When I try to insert a cd into the drive it doesn't recognize that there's something there and accept it. There is not already a disk in the drive. When I start it up holding the track key button, it makes a whirring sound like it's trying to do something but is unable. I tried resetting the PMU but that didn't work. Anyone have any ideas as to what is causing it or how to fix it?
I just moved to the UK so no genius bar in sight. Any help would be really appreciated.
I am having the same problem. The cd goes in and the fan turns on and it spins but then it stops and ejects itself. I went into the system preferences and changed the settings of what to do when a cd is put into the drive but whatever setting it is on it keeps doing the same thing.
when I put cd/dvd in to burn photos- it just whirs and then ejects. Up till a few days ago it worked fine. and now it doesn't . I checked Preferences. seems okAY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO FIX-- IS THE OPTICAL DRIVE DEFECTIVE?
Same problem here but I think mine was broken by the guys at the Genius Bar. My hard drive went out about a year and half ago and was replaced. After that my CD drive was scratching CD's. I didn't want to give up my computer again so I procrastinated and took it in about 4 months later and they said a bar had been bent and they had bent it back for me. They tried to tell me it was my fault. The tech guy put in a CD and it took a long while to read but then it showed up. That was the last time it worked. Of course when I got home to upload the music CD's I had purchased since then it wasn't working. I was so disgusted that I haven't gone back. Whenever I put a CD in the drive spins very loudly for about 20 seconds and then spits out the CD. And usually scratches it too. The work around I have been doing is putting CD's into my husband's desktop and then he shares that disk drive over our network so I can transfer files onto my computer. Would love to know if anyone has found out if Apple is fixing this problem (since it sounds like a defective piece of hardware) if the computer is still under Apple Care warranty. Thanks!
I'm having the same problem. It's a factory/store bought CD, and even more boggling, it's part of a 3 disc series, the first two of which work! I'm confounded...
Glad to see I am not alone, but how sad for all of us.
This is MY first experience with a Mac too. How disappointing for a compute that mocks the PC for so many issues! Can't believe the CD issues...DVDs are fine.
I guess we need our drives replaced!
Merry Christmas
I thought I was alone before reading all this. My MacBook, white 13", is only a month old and it will suck in a CD and 50% of the time it will recognize it. The other 50% it will spin for a second and then pretend it has no CD in it. It will not even eject it. I have to reboot to get it to final say, hey! there is a CD here! If this a not a software problem, I guess the only thing to do is get it replaced. I hate to be without it...
I just posted a question that comes from the same issue with the optical drive.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1843442&tstart=0 There are a lot of unhappy MacBook users out there with non-functional superdrives.
Now, I am trying to replace mine...unless you want to spend 150.00+, you have to play the ebay game. What a great way to spend hours of time I don't have!
my one month old macbook is taking cd in but not recognizing anythings in the drive. if i hold down the eject button it sounds like it "loads" and starts working
