TIP: Yahoo Instant Messenger, SMS Mobile

Did you know you can do Yahoo IM via text messaging (SMS)?
If you have a large or unlimited text messaging plan, you might like this.
In Yahoo Messenger you can "Log in to mobile" which will then user your text messaging app as your Yahoo IM. When I log out on the desktop I log in to Mobile. That way anyone that IM's me goes to the text message app.

This explains it:

The quick and dirty:
Send a text message to 92466 (spells 'YAHOO')
In the message type : in username password
(substitute with your user name and password)
You'll get a response that you're logged in with a partial listing of your friends list.
To log out:
To 92466 type: out

I have used this for years and it works great. Best yet, it works instantly, doesn't require you to run a program.
Now if only Google would do the same with GTalk.

AOL IM (AIM) has a similar thing called "AOL Anywhere" where it will forward SMSs to your phone automatically if you log out.

Thanks! Beejive is darn cool! I'm definitely going to use it and look for the native app coming later this year.

By the way, Google has it's own GTalk native app.

The only problem with Beejive is that you have to have the app open to use it. That's great for firing it up when you need to use it. But if you want to be logged in and receive IM's while it's in your pocket, you can't do that with Beejive unless they can get Apple to let them do it in background somehow.

The SMS method is always-on.
