Apple TV USB port

What is the USB port used for? I went to the Apple store and asked a few of the employees none of the Genuis' could give me a firm answer.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.2), 6GB RAM

That port is for use by Apple for diagnostics and troubleshooting; there is no officially approved use of it by consumers.

It's non-functional to the end-user.

Could be a marketing ploy too to make you think 'ah it's got a USB port for expansion', and then you get directed to the small print.

There is absolutely no-reason that they couldn't use it's functionality if they wanted to. Maybe it was added to give some future expansion capability if they ever decided to make any add-ons.

for diagnostics and trouble shooting although I think that it could take a firmware upgrade if required for future use and improvement.

We know from the various 'modding' sites that the USB port is functional with 'mods' in place.

Yes, indeed it is. I've been doing extensive research before deciding to purchase an Apple TV. There are plenty of hacks available, most notibly the patchsticks.
