Error 1714, Previous version of Itunes cannot be removed

I am trying to download the new version of Itunes; when I am about half way through the installation process, I get an error saying "Error 1714. The older version of iTunes cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." Does anybody know how to fix this,

Thanks,
Evan W

hi Evan!

hmmmm. okay, prior to any installs and unstalls, let's make sure all background applications are switched off. see:

http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108377

now, use the instructions in this document to fully uninstall itunes and quicktime:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

... and if you run into trouble on the uninstall, use the Windows Installer Cleanup utility described on that document too.

download and save a fresh copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.)

does that install go through?

I have encountered the exact same problems as the original poster. Followed all of the instructions posted on the website, cleaned my registry, and still I cannot install iTunes. The problem is that I uninstalled the previous version already, so I have no iTunes at all!!! And I cannot reformat my machine. So... if anyone, anyone knows how to fix this please help!

hmmm. these 1714 errors are sometimes associated with problems with your Window Installer. so, let's try method 1 from the following document:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555175

will the install go through after doing that?

keep us posted.

Thanks B.

That did not work, saddness.

I would rather reinstall windows but I can't since my XP cd has SP1 and I upgraded to SP2 then deleted the files to unistall it. Aargh.

I also tried to install it in Spanish and this is definitely an error message that is coming from the iTunes installer, not from Windows. Is there are way to get an older iTunes installer to try that? Like Version 2.0? and then I could try to upgrade from that to the latest version?

Thanks,

Mark T.

hi Mark!

this is definitely an error message that is coming from the iTunes installer, not from Windows.

actually, this one is a Windows Installer error message. it's just being returned in the context of an itunes install. see:

Windows Installer Error Messages

given that you've only got SP1 in there, let's just make doubly sure that you've got a copy of Windows Installer 3.1v2 on the PC. (there are odd problems associated with 3.1v1 and earlier versions.)

Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (3.1.4000.2435) is available

then let's try something else one more time. first download and install the Windows Cleanup installer utility (we'll be using it later on):

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

then download and save a fresh copy of the itunes installer to your harddrive. ( eventually, we'll be running the install from there rather than online.)

iTunes 6.0.1.3 Installer

switch off any antivirus or antispyware applications prior to any installs or uninstalls.

now, use the complete uninstall instructions given here to uninstall any existing itunes or Quicktime:

Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows

... then run the Installer CleanUp utility to just make sure any leftover installation registry entries for itunes and quicktime have been removed.

reboot.

switch antivirus and antispyware off again. then run the install again, using the fresh installer.

do you get an error message this time? if so, what does it say? (include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

I am having the same issue , I dont know how to fix it but I am pretty sure about the cause: so i hope someone can help.

Here is the reason: when intalled ( itunes , quicktime) it creates a folder under \WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations

Which might look like:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations\{501BADCD-F8F7-44CB-AC3F-6ED25C1A28B5}

Somehow with the updates or temp file clean up etc when this folder gets trashed 1714 error shows up I have seen some many people with this problem. I dont know how this folder gets trashed but try it ( or do not !) you will see this error.
