no sound + red light in headphone jack

I must be a computer jinx. or stupid. or both.
I recently uploaded some music from a back up hard drive into my iTunes,
and when it was done copying I tried to play a song. No dice.
In fact, it won't make any noise at all. None. Zip. The volume is all the way up.
I'm pretty sure nothing is muted. Unless there's a secret mute somewhere that i
accidentally activated. There isn't even any sound from the headphones either.
HOWEVER, there is a red light coming from the headphone jack when I play a song
on iTunes. ***? Can anybody help me?

i don't know if this will work for you.
but i tried the others above (except for the toothpick-ing)
i tried inserting the headphone jack several times and the red light is still there.

my headphone has 2 jacks (the other one is for the microphone)
I tried to insert the mic jack to the speaker hole and pressed VOlume up and VOILA! the sound is back 🙂

hope this would help.

i advice you not to try the toothpick-ing :))

I had the exact same problem.
No sound, red light out of headphone jack and death circle comes up when I tried to adjust the volume. External speakers and head phones work, but when there's nothing plugged in, no sound.
I looked on all the chat rooms, looked at all the advice; move the headphone jack in and out quickly, slowly, used a pen cap, a toothpick, a q-tip cut in half, putting the headphone jack in the other port and back again, putting something in the USB port then take it out and try it again... nothing worked.
I called applecare and he pretty much told me it was a physical problem and needed to be brought in to an Apple store. Pain in the ***, I'm at school and there's no Apple store here. I would have had to wait until reading week.
Then a few days later (today!) I tried it again. a Q-tip cut in half and put it in very gently and bingo, everything works!

So I do feel your pain, but my advice is keep trying, the Q-tip worked for me, and keep trying!

After spending a good two hours trying to solve this problem (twisting the headphones every which way, putting them in and adjusting the volume then removing them, etc.), I finally fixed my problem. I was worried about putting a toothpick into my computer, but, luckily, I fixed my problem without having to resort to that! All I did was put the headphones in and pull them out quickly a few times. Now there isn't a red light and my volume works fine!

Thanks for all the advice 😀

After about 30 minutes of playing around with a toothpick I think I've figured it out! If you look closely into the jack you can see two sensors fairly close to the outer edge, one on each side of the headphone jack. So, if you, instead of poking around, swirl the toothpick so that it touches both sensors (and you don't even have to push hard) then the problem was fixed.
Hope this helps!

I had the no audio, red light beam problem for about 6 months. I felt I had tried everything and had no options left. I decided to try the paperclip idea that someone had suggested and IT WORKED!
I took a paperclip, unbent the end, and stuck it into the audio port. About 4 or 5 millimeter into the audio port on the right side there is a small hole. I stuck the paperclip into the hole, felt a small click and my audio began working again. The red light is now off and I'm having no issues with the audio.

Unplugging and replugging my headphones caused this problem to go away on my black MB. I didn't realize there was a mechanical switch in there that detects the presence of a digital audio device. I guess my laptop is getting a little old, and it's gotten a little dirty in there maybe.
Thanks for the heads up.
