Sep 12, 2008 7:23 PM in response to JohnMKby Roberta Millstein,Sorry to repeat myself, but did you try to trigger the problem using Photo Booth, as described above? I'm not expressing skepticism -- I hope your problem really is fixed -- but trying to determine for myself if it is worth the effort to have the repair done. -
Sep 12, 2008 7:59 PM in response to Roberta Millsteinby Phrasiklea,I just have to say that I tried the PhotoBooth procedure, including all of the steps outlined a couple of posts earlier. I took 24 photos and was not able to get the stripes to show up. I have only seen them once on my machine, earlier this week, for the first time in the six or seven months since I purchased it (Feb, '08). So I know that my machine suffers from the stripes, but this method of triggering them seems not to work. Sorry. -
Sep 13, 2008 7:08 AM in response to Brett Lby pedroL,I'm having the exact same issue since day one! I bought my MacBook Pro in June 2008...
Found this topic today and I'm starting to worry more and more...
Monday I'll call Aplle and mention TS1258, but I have no really high hopes on them, especially because I'll be calling to the portuguese Apple...
Thanks for letting me know so much about this issue! -
Sep 13, 2008 7:52 PM in response to Brett Lby Cinnamon353,I just took the leap, and had my Macbook Pro's LCD replaced.
To my amazement, the replacement has not exhibited any signs of the vertical stripes whatsoever. I gave my best effort into reproducing the stripes, but to no avail; they are just gone!
I've booted/awoken the computer from Max -6 bars, and was greeted by a normal looking display. I have also intentionally aggravating the issue with Photo-Booth, with no resulting stripes.
I took my computer to the Genius Bar, pulled out Photo booth, and brought the stripes up. The Genius took my computer to the back room for "Testing", and came back with the papers I needed to sign. He said "I have never seen this before, but I will have your display replaced under warrantee."
One important point to mention is that my first display was an AUOptronics and my current LCD is a Samsung. The Samsung displays at the Apple store have not exhibited the Vertical Striping issue, despite my testing upon pick-up of my computer. I also know somebody with a MBP (Samsung Display) that did not exhibit the stripes either. I am not saying that Samsung display owners do not have this issue, but I am just curious as to why the Samsung displays I used do not seem to exhibit Vertical Stripes. -
Sep 15, 2008 11:30 PM in response to Brett Lby Joshua Parent,Any word on the new update? Does it fix our issue? I'll be installing it tomorrow, I'll post any findings then if no one beats me to the punch.

Sep 16, 2008 12:01 AM in response to Brett Lby Chris_B16,Here's another "Me too" story. Just got my 15" glossy display MBP at the Apple Store Sept. 6 2008 and having the same "stripes" issue. I first saw the problem after the second day of owning it and found it kind of weird but I ignored it. The next day I saw it again so I did some research and found this thread. Closing it and counting some time seems to work but again after getting off of work today, the same thing happened after it being off for eight hours. This time I took pictures of it with the System profiler window open so they can see my model and serial number. Thinking about taking it in tomorrow but I don't really want to exchange it because I finally have the MBP setup to how I want it and having the display changed is not an option right now because I have a trip this upcoming weekend. Not sure if anyone else already posted about "recently bought" MBP, but mine's just 11 days old. I know Apple is better then this so hopefully a fix will be out soon. -
Sep 16, 2008 10:02 AM in response to Joshua Parentby Roberta Millstein,I installed 10.5.5 and took about 40+ pics in PhotoBooth, both plugged in and not plugged in, with brightness halfway down, and I was unable to trigger the stripes. I am cautiously -- very cautiously -- optimistic. Still wondering about the underlying cause, however. -
Sep 16, 2008 10:48 AM in response to Brett Lby SoccerFiend24x7,Well, until this morning, I wondered what all of the hubub was about with all of the stripes complaints... Now, just after installing 10.5.5, what do I see?? Stripes. I guess I can now officially throw my "me too" into the thread.
I did take a picture if anyone is still interested. Closed the lid and reopened it and everything is good again.

Sep 16, 2008 7:20 PM in response to Brett Lby Steve Probst,I must chime in! I've this problem for months (bought in Jan), though not as bad as photo. Today, it's been all day! -
Sep 17, 2008 6:51 AM in response to Brett Lby alidog,Hi folks,
Just bought a macbook pro on September 14, had the vertical banding on initial boot. I'm coming from a pc and I thought it was a feature. Showed up three more times after mac sleeping; hmmm. That's how I got to your thread. Control shift eject works but is annoying. If anyone is keeping track my build was between 7-21-08 and 7-28-08 at the Shanghai plant. Anyone know of the planned release date of the new mbp'? I will probably return this but not sure of how to get rid of all my personal info and programs loaded. -
Sep 17, 2008 6:53 PM in response to alidogby pedroL,Sorry to be so inaccurate, but:
I read somewhere that the new Macbook Pro's are supposed to be released in October...
About our common Stripe thing:
I went to an Apple Store and the technician told me to have my display replaced!
As simple as that... no explanation involved...
I just hope that his solution really solves the problem... -
Sep 18, 2008 2:04 AM in response to alidogby ateringcateringcat,my MBP's not exhibited the stripes for while now, probably because i avoid leaving it 6 boxes down from full brightness. thought i'd check back here to see if apple had found time to address this widespread problem properly. seems not.
have to sy, i'm puzzled by this "new screen" policy that apple seems to have taken to the problem. if this fixes the problem, why don't they factory fit these *good screens* to the new MBPs that, according to posters here, they are still selling with faulty units??
ths morning, i succeeded in provoking my MBP into striping by running Photobooth at 6 blocks down brightness setting, half battery. stripes first time.
tried again at 5 down, then 7 down. no stripes. funny sort of hardware problem if you ask me.
still, not seen anyone who's had a replacement screen back here, or have i just not being paying attention? -
Sep 18, 2008 9:04 AM in response to Brett Lby MarkLboro,I bought my MBP last October, and had no screen issues at all until August, when I installed Leopard
(10.5.4). Since then I've had the stripes constantly. None of the tricks, resets, etc. get rid of them, they are ALWAYS there. I updated to 10.5.5 this week - no change. I will complain under the guarantee next week. I'm really disappointed with Apple. -
Sep 18, 2008 9:32 AM in response to Brett Lby GYamane,Since I upgraded to 10.5.5 (whenever that came out) I have not seen the stripes. Am hesitant about saying this but oh well. Have used the MBP every day on and off battery and have tried to get the stripes to show and they haven't yet. -
Sep 18, 2008 11:16 AM in response to Roberta Millsteinby Roberta Millstein,I take back what I say above -- I have now managed to trigger the stripes with Photo Booth under 10.5.5.
