Sep 19, 2008 6:59 AM in response to Brett Lby alidog,Hello again,
Just wanted to confirm that 10.5.5 update does not repair the problem. Duplicated the vertical stripes by taking photo booth pics in dark room; turned on lights and the bars appeared. I'd like to produce them on demand so I'll try during daylight hours to see if I can get it to duplicate. Definitely is hooked to brightness control; not fully convinced that a display or change of machines would help. -
Sep 20, 2008 7:05 PM in response to alidogby alidog,I'm writing to say I have an appointment for return tomorrow on the 20th. This was my first Mac and I'm still torn on a return. I love the hardware; it's a tinker's delight. Maybe I can get in line for the next MBP coming up. Thanks to all you folks who posted here; I'm hoping that they resolve the problem for all of you.
Good luck and God bless -
Sep 21, 2008 11:19 PM in response to Brett Lby Khail,"Me Too"
This happened when I turned my laptop back on after having turned it off 2ish hours earlier and unplugging it. closed and opened lid. that apparently fixed the strange stripes. hope this doesn't happen again since i bought this MBP on Sept 6th. -
Sep 22, 2008 7:26 AM in response to Brett Lby PasJden,Just count me in. I Bought it in april 2008. 2.4 ghz, 7200 rpm HD. I use 10.5.5.
An apple tech. changed my display about 3 weeks ago...Did'nt fixed the problem.
The last time the problem showed up, the computer was starting up and it happened in the log in screen. It disapeared by itself after i logged in to my user account. I was not using Photo Booth or ajusting brightness.

Sep 26, 2008 2:17 AM in response to Brett Lby DimitriMac,I got my MacBook Pro in the beginning of July. For the first week I didn't notice anything odd (not to say that all was Ok, just I didn't notice anything) Then the stripes started. At first I thought I was imagining things but then found this post and realised that I was not alone. At first it didn't bother me too much as it happened very infrequently and as I live overseas I felt I would have to either be inconvenienced by sending my MacBook back to the States or just suck it up and hope things didn't get worse. But then about 4 weeks ago the stripes appeared on almost every start-up, regardless of what state or power configuration I was switching the MacBook on from. Now I was really upset as I felt that it was just a question of time before the whole display failed. And then 10.5.5 came along. I did the software update as per the normal prompts and am happy to report that since then I haven't had a single occurrence of stripes. That's about two weeks now. whether its a coincidence or not I can't tell. Am I counting my eggs too early, I don't know. I just hope it doesn't happen again.
Thanks to all who contributed to this post and offered insightful tips and support.
Regards,
Dimitri -
Sep 28, 2008 6:33 AM in response to Brett Lby Jerrymyah,I've had the same problem too, but once only...when the machine was 1-2 weeks old. I took a photo of it also.
I have not have the problem again since. I have all the current updates via Software Update.
But the Hard Drive in this machine whines when the 80GB one in my old 2.0GHz MBP CoreDuo didn't... -
Oct 1, 2008 9:18 PM in response to Brett Lby lps007lps,My macbook pro purchased in Nov 07 had the vertical stripes from the first week. I called apple care multiple times, but since no one seemed able to say exactly what was causing the problem, I hesitated to send it in for repair. Last week, however, my hardrive died, and so while it was in the shop for that replacement, apple also tried replacing the logic board, since that's what they'd suggested multiple times before to fix the vertical stripes. And, funnily enough, they replaced the logic board only to see the problem reappear immediately. They tried ordering another logic board, but I went to the store to complain that the repair was taking too long. I walked out with a brand new mbp instead, with a faster processor and bigger hardrive too. So even though I'm not pleased that this problem hasn't been resolved, I am very happy with how apple handled the problem for me. I don't know yet if this new mbp has the same problem, but at least apple seems to be standing by their product. -
Oct 3, 2008 4:04 PM in response to Brett Lby Roncore,Greetings, My name is Ron, long time reader, first time poster!
and i just wanted to say...*ME TOO!!!!*
it happened about 10 minutes ago, and then i had mild heart palpitations... then i looked it up online and found the "ctrl + shift + eject" method. and it went away. no return yet, but we'll see.
Specs:
*New MBP purchased March 2008,*
*OSX 10.5.5, Intel core 2 Duo 2.5ghz, 512 video card, 4gigs Ram*
my machine was not plugged in when it happened. My brightness is typically 0-3 bars below full, this is the first time i've seen this issue. it has not happened again in the 20 minutes since i saw it.
so yeah...thats about it i guess. my hats in the ring. we'll see what happens. -
Oct 4, 2008 7:17 PM in response to Fredrik Bräutigamby g5g4g3,for everybody that has the problem another user wrote on another topic related to this saying that if you press shift, control and eject when your having this problem the display will go black. Then move your mouse and the display will turn back on. The strips should be gone. -

Oct 10, 2008 8:11 AM in response to Brett Lby head_honcho,Apple Confirms Failing Nvidia Graphics Cards in MacBook Pros, Offers Free Fixes and Refunds
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
"This doesn't speak for volumes for Nvidia's credibility. As you might recall, a huge swath of Nvidia's notebook graphics cards—ones with the G84 or G86 chipset—fail at "higher-than-normal" rates. MacBook Pros have the 8600M GT, which uses the G84. Nvidia assured Apple MacBook Pros were totally cool. Turns out, they were lying! After doing their own investigation Apple "has determined that some MacBook Pro computers... may be affected."
The specific models affected are MacBook Pros with the 8600M GT manufactured between May 2007 and uh, last month. You know you've got a crappy video card if you see screwy or scrambled video, or worse, no video, even if the computer is turned on. Apple will fix any Nvidia graphics card problem for free within two years of the original purchase date. If you've had to pay to get the problem fixed before, Apple will give you a refund.
The fact that Nvidia apparently misled Apple is deeply disturbing, especially as they counter the Inquirer's continuing reports about defective chips. If you've had video problems with MBP, raise your hand please. [Apple via AppleInsider]"

Oct 10, 2008 8:37 PM in response to Brett Lby Admiritocrustum,So like many here on the list I too have been plagued by the dreaded 'stripes' and figured I would share my experience hence far.
I have been avoiding taking my machine in these past 6 months since I got my new Macbook Pro as I have been keeping tabs on this thread and have seen that one has almost as much chance as getting their machine back in worse shape than when it was sent it.
But today I relented and finally took it into the local Apple Store for a genius to look over. I quoted TS1258 and this thread while reproducing the issue with Photobooth, and the tech informed me that he had indeed seen this problem a few times and they were aware of it. He informed me that I needed a new LCD and that would fix my issue.
Of course I mentioned that this has been done a number of times to others (I told him to check this thread) and he said that it was kind of a 'hit or miss' thing and if I did not get a LCD that worked this time we would keep trying until we got one that worked.
This, as you might imagine, was not confidence inspiring, but I figured I would have them replace the LCD and see what happens. They will also be checking the logic board at the same time as I have the dreaded early 2008 8600M GT.
We will see what happens... but I figured I would share what I heard today. Realizing of course it is nothing new here... and contradicts what others have heard. All in all I have not been so happy with my new purchase... -
Oct 10, 2008 11:09 PM in response to head_honchoby hel2,Thanks for the info head houncho!
This appears to be causing most of the problems people are having with their MBPs in this thread, a faulty graphics card and not the display, replace the screen and the problem continues, why? because in most cases its the graphics card.
Which leads to another problem, as noted in other threads, the cards have been replaced ONLY to have the stripes return in one shape or another (replacing one faulty card with another problem card).
Whether its the card or display, this has been poorly handled by Apple, I feel some kind of exchange program for a new MacBook Pro is in order.

Oct 11, 2008 10:59 AM in response to hel2by Slvrin,i bought my 2.4 15" MacBook pro 2 month ago, only to read yesterday on Cnet faulty GFX card!
they say macbook pro maufactured between May 2007 and September 2008 are faulty!
is this true?
cause i have'nt seen any problems with my mac, except for the heat thing.
i stopped running games, i noticed it got realy hot that i had to take it off my lap, i use Istat to monitor, i saw the temp. GPU was way over 85`C
but normal i get between 55'C and 70'C
can someone help me with my questions please?
1- what's the normal temp for CPU and GPU?
2- will my mac eventually break even tho i don't get it over heated?
3- how can i find my maufacture date with the serial no.
i think there's no kind of a fix for this, Apple should realy consider a mass recall! or exchange for another.
Thanx
