Oct 21, 2008 8:42 PM in response to Brett Lby highland.ink,my MBP is fresh out of the box and i have the vertical stripe problem too.. what a HUGE BUMMER. -
Oct 21, 2008 9:51 PM in response to highland.inkby groovearchitect, sorry to hear that, but thanks for posting. one important question: did you buy the "old" all silver MBP or the new "silver/black" one?
regardless of which model you bought, i would bring it back immediately and ask for a machine that is working 100% properly. unacceptable. -
Oct 22, 2008 8:28 AM in response to highland.inkby elmax,The same occurred to me today! on a new 2.5Ghz Macbook Pro 15'' matte just bought yesterday!!
It happened once i restored it from sleep, tried potobooth method but didn't work for me.
it's sad to know i have a defective machine just out of the box..
don't know what to do, will a replacement solve the problem? -
Oct 22, 2008 9:02 AM in response to elmaxby sinbad21,The replacement may resolve the problem, or not. Wait a moment and see how often it occurs.
Take my case : since I have set the light to "automatic" I haven't got the stripes for 5 months ! -
Oct 22, 2008 10:19 AM in response to elmaxby John Williams24,hey elmax and highland ----
not sure if you chose the older models on purpose, as the new MBPs are out now?!
It'll be VERY interesting to see if the new MBPs(glossys) have this issue ....
anyone near an apple store?
I'll be trying to get mine repaired next month....had stripes on first penryn in march/april and same issue on this replacement --- been hoping for a genuine fix before taking in for repair.......
cheers,
J. -
Oct 22, 2008 12:49 PM in response to Brett Lby Stevemacuser,Count me in.
The brand new MBP that I'm using has that issue, but in a smaller scale.
Maybe a lot of people didn't notice this version yet because it doesn't show very often, and when it does, it's almost unnoticeable. Only evident with white background.
In my case, It appears only at the bottom of the display, and the shadowed stripes don't go further than 12 cm in height.
My question is if someone noticed a progression for worse as time passes, or if the degree of the anomaly is always the same. -

+I did not see the new "(Original)" category in the forum before posting this. so just ignore... or whatever.....+
*TO ALL NEW POSTERS:*
*PLEASE STATE WHAT MODEL YOUR "BRAND NEW" MBP IS!*
*Is it a brand new "Late 2008" with glass-screen or is it a brand new "Early 2008" with the old enclosure and FW400?*
I had the problem with the stripes as well on my matte early 2008 MBP. I got my cheapo screen (can't remember the manufacturer, u can look for my old posts here...) replaced with a very good samsung display and never saw them again! It was kind of a hard decision for me to get those repairs done, because I did not want to have a ruined enclosure or other faults due to the complicated repairs. The enclosure was fine anyway, the book just got louder (fans).
I sold it, because I was was annoyed with a few other things, like the lost color profile after screensaver and I recently got some weird scrambled graphic errors (i bet on a faulty nvidia chip!).
So now I ordered a Late 2008 model to have fun with some new faults and bugs. It gets boring when one can almost make bets on the next fault that will be showing up...
So please state clearly on which model you get the stripes, so that I can cancel my order and get an old Titanium!
*apple, u really suck on this!* -
Oct 22, 2008 2:00 PM in response to Brett Lby Admiritocrustum,Fixed!
I thought I would update everyone on my string of recent repairs.
Well they just finished replacing the clamshell (top assembly with everything such as the LCD, camera, etc) I am unable to reproduce the stripes. I have tried photobooth, ctrl + shift + command, automatic lighting adjustment, suspend / resume and anything else I could think of for the last bit and nothing has worked.
Which would seem to match well with what the community here has been saying, that this is a backlighting issue (not an LCD one as I had that replaced at one point only to have the stripes still there) so unless they replace this, which was done when they swapped out the clamshell, then no number of new logic boards or LCDs will work.
So unless they come back I am going to consider it fixed. Here's hoping. -
Oct 24, 2008 5:52 AM in response to Admiritocrustumby Oliver Timm,Hello,
I just found this topic by coincident just today!!! I have the same problem and thought I am the only one in this world until now...
I might be wrong here so please feel free to shift me to another topic and my appologies but I didn't know where to post. I have the early 2008 model 2.4 G with 256 MB. My problem is I bought my MBP on 20.09.08 in Portland but I am living in Dubai. Here is no Genius and no Apple Shop only an Apple Premium Seller (???). So what do I do in case the problem gets more severe and I deceide not to live with it anymore????
Any help? -
Oct 25, 2008 1:38 AM in response to Brett Lby Siuav8,I bought my MBP in Mar 2008 and got the stripes. After reading the original thread I changed my power settings, specifically the "slightly dim the display when using this power source." I turned this off and have not got the stripes in 6 months. I know this has not worked for some but it did for me. -
Oct 25, 2008 11:23 PM in response to Siuav8by Anat Epstein,I want to report yet another MBP w same problems.
Mine was purchased in March 2008, non-glossy screen, 15 inch.
The problem occurs usually after I have been working nonstop for 10-12 hours (happens), and not always. I am not sure what prompts it.
Today, after reading this thread, I tried to put the computer to sleep, and the problem went away.
Let's see what happens. -
Oct 28, 2008 8:31 AM in response to Anat Epsteinby Allan Davis,I have contacted Apple today for the second about this issue and a keyboard problem as well
It is going in for repair in the next 48 Hours to see if they can sort it out. The problem is its intermittent so I don't know if they will find the fault. The Apple rep told me I would just have to live with the screen issue. I asked if he would "just live with it if it was his" he said no.
Makes me think my Apple Care is worthless to be honest especially if they just turn on the machine see its working and then send it back (which I am sure is going to happen)
On a maybe related subject does anybody else have keyboard issues as well. I get an unresponsive keyboard and track pad a few times a week, they both lock up completely until I close the lid then they will work again just long enough for me to save my work and reboot

Oct 28, 2008 6:34 PM in response to Allan Davisby groovearchitect,hi allan,
how old is your mbp? if it's new - get a new right away. two defects is more than enough reason to demand a replacement.
as far as the problem being intermittent, just inform repair service to do the photobooth trick described in this thread to "hopefully" trigger the stripes. and mention this thread, period.
good luck and let us know the outcome -
Oct 29, 2008 2:48 AM in response to groovearchitectby Allan Davis,I got the MBP in March and this will be the third incidence for this laptop already
1. Broken Superdrive (had to go in for repair 3 times due to incompetent authorized repairer)
2. MagSafe charger led stopped lighting up and charging laptop
3. Keyboard and Screen issue had to call them twice now (not convinced it will be repaired but will wait and see)
I have had dozens of Macs and never had a single problem with any of them but this MBP is a lemon

Oct 29, 2008 4:53 AM in response to Brett Lby Azarias,I got the strange vertical stripes on my brand new MacBook Pro 15" - one of the last with silver keyboard and silver LCD frame.
I did not expect to get the problem on a MacBook Pro produced in August 2008.
