Nov 19, 2008 11:16 PM in response to Shattleby longhong,Count me too... MBP 2.5GHZ(early 2008). So disappointed... -
Nov 20, 2008 7:14 AM in response to longhongby Evski,Im another victim. Bought my MBP 2.4 in April 08 so I assume that makes it "early".
Must admit not seen this much of late - maybe since 10.5.5
Would be nice to have definitve fix. Anyone else here in Australia got a resolution? -
Nov 20, 2008 4:33 PM in response to Brett Lby carloschange,I ended up returning my refurb Macbook Pro for another refurb. The 2nd one does not have the stripe problem at all even when I try the Photobooth trick. So I think its hardware and NOT software. I also noticed this one has a quieter DVD drive. Looks like the first was a lemon but I'm happy now with my replacement. -
Nov 21, 2008 6:32 PM in response to carloschangeby workerpoor,Hello everybody ...

Nov 23, 2008 4:50 AM in response to Brett Lby +om,count me in..
MBP 2.4GHz, Februari 2008
it happens once in a while and i was scared to death the first time.
being not so lucky; i'm also having spots in the display and the 'unresponsive keyboard/trackpad' problem.
now i'm asking myself what will fail next.. ****, what happened with the good quality apple products? I just hate all these problems. -
Nov 24, 2008 3:25 AM in response to Brett Lby crowfeather,From my own experiences, this happens only when I sleep the computer regularly (& wake it up). I have a 1st gen MacBook Pro from 2006, and I noticed this problem happened (though infrequently) when I traveled about, and put the computer to sleep. When I'm at home, I basically leave it on all the time, and I never have this problem. Another thing I've noticed is that if you wait it out, the problem self-corrects. I haven't read all the posts so I don't know if anyone else noticed that. -
Nov 24, 2008 11:03 AM in response to Brett Lby omnirife,I am also having this problem. I telephoned the Apple support who told me to do the following:
1. Shut down.
2. Remove power cord and battery.
3. Hold down power button for 5 seconds
4. Plug everything back in
It did not work. I am surprised that this problem is so widespread. I have a friend who also has this problem. But his Macbook Pro also had a lot of other problems too.
I believe it to be not a problem with the logic board or displays because people seem to have had theirs replaced and the problem re-occurs. Unless of course the problem is so endemic that new components may also have the fault.
When can we have a permanent fix? It is very offputting and ugly.
Mine is a refurbished Macbook Pro 2.5ghz, 2gb RAM, 5200rpm HDD, 15.4" monitor, Mac OSX 10.5.5. I bought it in May 2008.

Nov 24, 2008 12:16 PM in response to Brett Lby bandit,Last night i put my macbook pro to sleep. This morning turned it on and saw the vertical stripes for the first time. I tried turning the brightness up then down to 6 bars, unplugged the computer, opened photobooth and took pictures, non of this worked.
I restarted the laptop with it unplugged and the screen now looks ok.
It is disturbing that apple has not been able to find a solution for this. I bought my macbook pro June 2008. No way should it be having problems already. Don't know if i should bother taking it in. Doesn't sound like apple has been able to fix this problem. -

By the way, this won't fix the problem - it is just supposed to reproduce it so that Apple can test it etc. Not that they seem to care. -
Nov 25, 2008 2:45 AM in response to omnirifeby longhong,I found a workaround from an early post of this thread:
press controlshifteject to sleep the screen and press control+shift to wake it up -
Nov 25, 2008 8:37 AM in response to Brett Lby illustrata,These stripes just appeared on my screen. The Macbook Pro is about three months old. Will do a time machine backup and call Apple, now. -
Nov 26, 2008 9:29 AM in response to longhongby omnirife,Hello. Thanks - this is working for now. I used this command when I first saw this thread and the problem hasn't come back yet. It is still a stupid problem for such an expensive computer to have. -
Nov 26, 2008 2:06 PM in response to Brett Lby tirnszw,Good News.
Apple recognizes this problem:
See: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1258
According to a tech support, who is currently working on my MBP, it is a known issue and it will be fixed by a software update. -
Nov 26, 2008 3:26 PM in response to tirnszwby dggraphics,That article suggests downloading 10.5.3 to remedy the problem although the current version is 10.5.5.
It's been happening for quite a while, if they were able to fix it with a software update I think they would have by now, as evidenced by this large thread. They may be working on an update that may mask the inherent problem with the backlight.
Asking the user to press Option-Shift-Eject to reset the malfunctioning display is not a fix either. -
Nov 27, 2008 4:12 AM in response to willowtechby Mindfly,Quote willowtech: While it does not happen all the time, I have been able to make the strips appear when moving the screen/lid up and down.
I reproduced the error the same way. Bought my MBP on nov. 11th and returned it yesterday. It was the last the store had as it's EOL - I just found the machine at a another store this morning, will go and pick it up later...hopefully I will not have the same issues with the new one. If I do, I'll return it in for good and prolly go for one of the new versions...
