I bought an early 2008 2.5Ghz MacBook Pro in April 2008 and quickly experienced the vertical stripes problem.

It's now end of November 2008 and the workarounds remain the same: when shutting down keep brightness five boxes or less from maximum and I never see the stripes. If I forget to do this they sometimes appear, and then I use shift-control-eject to shut down the screen and any key to instantly start it up again.

At this point I don't think we'll see any fixes from Apple. I view this as a minor annoyance on an otherwise great machine.

The only worry is that this presages early total screen failure. I guess that's a reason to keep this thread going, to monitor the ongoing situation.

    best,
    Jake

Well, I picked up my new MacBook Pro thursday. Did the "PhotoBooth-test" = nothing.
Started installing my applications. Transferred my whole sound library to my new loveable peace of hardware. Left the MBP on stand-by and went to the nursery to pick up my daughter. Came home an hour later. Opened the beloved lit = the stripes appeared on my new machine as well. It's tuesday. 5 days after I picked it up in the shop.

Dunno if I'll take it in again. Just don't wanna spend the time installing and moving libraries once again. Did the "thing" with removing the battery and holding down the powerbutton for a handfull of seconds. Hopefully it will help, but I seriously doubt it.

Well, I'll be back in a week or so with an update.

    Cheers.

When you say "new" MacBook Pro -- was it an "early 2008" model or the current, "late 2008" model?

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the stripes problem in the current models.

I experienced the striping problem for the first time since upgrading to 10.5.5 today. I was just surfing the web (on battery power on full brightness) then WHAM striping. I wish I had taken a picture of it.

My MBP was actually running pretty cool. Only around 42C give or take odd...

Just my 2 cents on this.

My MBP late 2007 was replaced because of defects - the new machine - an "early 2008" model - had the striping issue after 2 days.
    To me it was DOA.

Since I already knew about the possible striping issue, I did my research and collected
these forum posts, the KB article by apple amd steps to reproduce the problem.

Then I got back to the Apple Care guys (my case wasn't closed yet) - explained what was going on, told them about
the stuff I collected, that it was a defect replacement and demanded a new one.

That worked. Got a new one, again early 2008 model, no problems since I got it in september.

Well, I have an early 2008 MBP and now that i have done all my updates I now have the striping problems. So in my case they have not fixed the problem..... i am at a loss as what to do besides take it back and hope for the best. It is going to be a major pain one way or the other. One to keep with the prospect of it getting worse, or hand it over to them not sure when to see it again as it is the holiday season.

If they have the part in stock at the Apple Store then it shouldn't take them more than a day or so. If they have to order the part then it's 5-7 days usually.

This problem has occurred with my MBP as well. I purchased it March 2008. I have tried to document and take pictures of every time it occurs. April 24, May 12, and December 8 is what I have document, though it has happen other times. When the problem was first occurring, April-May, I took it into the Genius Bar and presented them with the problem. They replaced the logic board. Did it work? Obviously not.

I wonder if this problem is occurring due to the faulty NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT graphics card? For those of you experiencing the issue, what graphics card do you have? Has anyone had their graphics card replaced? If so, has the problem still occurred? When the problem was first occurring, I was able to connect an external monitor to my MBP, and the problem was still there. That in itself tells me that it is more than likely a graphics card related issue.

I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow. Wish me luck.

The above link is useless if Apple doesn't state what is causing the problem. Oh and if their "resolution" does not resolve anything.

This seems to be fixed with the 10.5.6 update.

ie., I launch Photo Booth, and I cannot replicate the problem whereas before I could.

My stripes stayed on straight for 4/5 days. Decided it was time to take it in during Thnaksgiving- then it stopped! Never took it in.

Try threatening your little silver friend, see if it works. (a little levity)

Sorry to disappoint you ppl, but after 10.5.6 the stripes problem persist, I have just turned on this morning, and There they were. Crazy apple hasn't come with a fix yet, We should sue them(or at least do something) for such an incompetence with a problem that its coming from factory.

Just downloaded 1.5.6, started PhotoBooth with my screen set to Brightness "-6", took a photo, and the stripes are still there.....
I can feel myself lucky, my machine shows the stripes just with Photobooth and if i put it to sleep to -6 brightness......but this is unacceptable for an expensive machine.
