Hi: had the vertical stripes once only.....had my refurbished early 2008 macbook pro 2.4 only three weeks.
but... I also have an external apple cinema display 20 inch... because photoshop elements 6 steals the screen I must also move the menu bar to the 20 inch screen. I Thenoccasionally found safari slow downloads impossible as everything was done on the remote monitor. when I Only used the macbook pro screen all was ok. ran a bandwith test found the macbook lcd download 2.7meg then the external monitor only 400kbps. this test was consistent for several days. finally I dragged the safari window back to the macbook pro from the monitor (no resetting no moving the menu nothing else) ran the test downloads and guess what I was back to normal speed. I did the reverse dragged the safari window back to the external monitor and slow speeds once again.

next day i called apple support it was escalated to specialist level within 10 minutes I ran several test same thing ... then suddenly it worked ok.....

It never occurred with my old powerbook aluminum g4 1ghz
I will in the next couple of days run some more test and at apple;s request report back.

    cheers.........I think

You do know you can turn off the background? Photoshop Elements>Preferences>General and turn off Fill Workspace background. Then it only steals the edges of your screen.

Yes, but you may be able to hide the palette and project bins and move your palettes and the toolbox to the second monitor. Have you tried that?

the image window goes to the second monitor as do tools palette but not the top space with all the tool details. also the layers window and a couple of others move over too. gets very confusing as you have to move around too much.

but thanks learned to remember to keep digging..

The thing I find odd is that most people found this error relatively quickly after purchasing it. I bought my MacBook last March and just now have experienced the problem for the first time. Yeah for regular backups and being in the US where I can actually communicate easily with the techs.

Somewhere up there in this thread was a suggestion to reset the PRAM (hold down cmd-option-P-R on bootup). That seems to have done the trick so far. Will post again if and when they come back.

Hm. Unfortunately, that only seemed to be a temporary fix. It's coming and going again. Oh, well.

This is so frustrating, just bought this MacBook Pro to replace a MacBook (the second I owned, first one crumbled away) with 20 plus dead, stuck and hot pixels (still have warranty!) on the screen. Owned that machine (my MacBook) 10 months or so, needed a airport card replacement in the first week of use (toke 2 weeks to repair) then the trackpad went crazy (took 2 weeks to repair) then the keyboard died on me (took a month to repair).

And now Apple can place me on the list of proud owners of a MacBook Pro with a defective backlighting. Just to get me irritated from the start all over again just as with my first MacBook.

I'm u HUGE Apple fan, a lot of people have bought a Apple just because of my enthusiasm for the hardware and system. Well this enthusiasm lowered a lot!!

I buy computers to work on them, not to have them laying around in repair shops. I'm a webdesigner, video editor, sound engineer and photographer. I do these things not as a hobby but to put bread on my table. I lost a lot of money because of faulty Apple hardware this year!!

The last few hardware updates I bought from Apple where really, really disappointing!!

I cant believe it I have just got the stripes back again

It has already been in to Apple for this defect and a keyboard / trackpad defect. They replaced the "top case" that was at the beginning of November.

    This machine is a lemon

If it goes to Apple again that will be three times (not including a replacement power adapter, a replacement battery that died after 7 months, and three times for the same bad Superdrive replacement)

Apple have been good in repairing the machine but I can only be without it for so long (college commitments) and my patience is wearing very thin
