insect inside my mac!!!

I'm freaking out because I just saw an insect crawl inside my mac! I tried to get it, but it went inside before I could process what was happening (!!!)

It went through the vents where the screen is hinged onto the base... it's one of those ant-like insects with wings.

What should I do!? Could it damage my (just-purchased) mac!!? 😟 ... Is this covered under the AppleCare Protection Plan?

The classic response to this , of course, is that you had better submit a "bug report", then! , but I know that isn't really helpful. 😉

The worry with a flying ant is that it might be a "queen' looking for a place to start a colony, though it was more likely just attracted by the warmth. If the computer was running at the time it may simply have been blown back out again, as the vents go to the outlet for the two fans. If it hasn't got too far in you might even be able to blow it out, or encourage it to leave , by putting the computer under maximum stress by running some video rendering or the like. The processor heat sinks end up near the fans , and the beastie might decide that it is too hot for comfort, or get ejected forcibly as the fan speed increases.

Barring that, it is a trip to the repair shop, I fear. I wouldn't really be worried about the likelihood of damage from a single ant, but a pregnant female could do some real harm, once there were a few thousand of her progeny wandering around inside!

You aren't alone, I'm afraid, and ants really can be an issue in electrical gear, so it needs watching, though the chances are, if there was just one, nothing will come of it.

Good luck!

Put an ant trap or two outside the mac and or a sticky mouse trap with some honey in the middle of the glue board and see if it will come out to eat and then die.

If you can live with a corpse inside then put the mac in a plastic bag and vacuum all the air out of it and leave for a day. Or fill with CO2 with dry ice in a well large pastic bag and suffocate it.

Or play hip-hop music in iTunes which would drive anything away.

Play sexy ant love songs on a stereo and tempt it to go investigate, then swat it.

Try vacuuming it out at the same spot it went in.

Might need to specify the particular ant species , too Rick.

The literature on this subject seems somewhat sparse, but http://fireant.ifas.ufl.edu/publications/EE31_127.pdf offers information based on what happens when you freeze one of your less durable, equatorial, ant species.

If this is a hardier , northern, ant, however, the OP might run into a situations where they have to get their freezer down to a temperature below the recommended minimum storage temperature for the MBP.

Mmm. this could get tricky!

slvg85, could you confirm that this ant is not a refugee from Alaska or the Siberian tundra? 😉

Cheers

Rod
