What is error #404

Lately when I open Safari I see the normal web page in the background and then a small dialog box pops up with the Safari logo in the top left corner the the typed web page and under that is the error #404 - I then click on the blue button in the right hand corner and then it goes away and there is my page behind it working fine? How come this comes up?

It essentially means that the URL is no longer on the server, or is simply outdated or incorrect. Query it with the webmaster of the site by emailing them to advise that you are receieving an error 404 message. If it is a highly trafficked site, you will probably find the response to be quite quick and the URL to become active again once they are aware of the problem.

In the meantime, all you can really do (normally, unless there is a mirror/alternative identical page) is wait...
