iPhone 2G and battery life w/ push

O.K, to anyone out there that feels embarrassed to even discuss issues with a 2G user.. I apologize; I am still recovering from the wounds when the price of the iPhone was lowered after I stood in line to get one of the first phones available that memorable launch date in the summer of 2007; but that is not what I am here to discuss, I have actually a question: is everyone experiencing battery issues with the Push concept from mobile.me? I used to be able to use my phone for a whole day without recharging but now after 8 hours of normal use... I do not have any battery left; in fact I had to turn off Push to allow me to have a phone for the whole day. Is this just happening to me, or is it common now with the Mobile.me era?

That is the draw back of push services. Since it is actively being pushed data pretty often it means your using the network a lot more, draining the battery much faster. Where as if you do manual it only uses it when you tell it, so the battery is being saved the rest of the time because the phone isn't constantly accessing the network.

I have used push services on other devices and not encountered this same battery drain issue. It certainly is not an issue with BlackBerry devices and I have colleagues using Windows Mobile with ActiveSync that get better battery performance. Push services should not kill an iPhone in two days let alone less than one day. It seems to me there is a problem here that needs to be addressed.

I have to agree. I've been using a BlackBerry for nearly 5 years now and with push constantly on and receiving hundreds of emails each day, I've rarely had my battery run out on me. I can barely make it through the day with the iPhone 3G, and that's with 3G/push/GPS all turned off. The battery life is certainly disappointing. For the business person this battery drain is essentially crippling. I do hope Apple can fix this with a firmware update. As much as I like the thinness of the iPhone 3G, I would happily accept a thicker body if it allowed me to leave my charger at home.

My battery life has been hit hard by the new features too. My iPhone won’t make it to the end of the day without some juice. I guess Steve Jobs was right to have concerns about battery life with regards to 3G and the first iPhone.

I’m pretty disappointed in the drain on the battery; I’m going to have to have some real test lab results of the 3G iPhone before I even think about buying one.

Apple needs to update the firmware to include a power saving setting that lets you turn off features with one tap.

Not that I am happy still, but I am glad I am not alone in this one. I would like to have an explanation from apple about this. To me battery life is an essential, a core function of a portable device; much more than GPS, much more than having a camera (which BTW also is terrible) just to name two. I have a cell phone because I need a cell phone. If it happens to have many bells and whistles and also happens to have a logo with a fruit on it, more power to it; but these bells and whistles are useless if there is no battery power, and the cell phone component (the real reason why I bought the device and made a contract with ATT) is virtually non-existent.
