How to add + when redialing recent international calls?
I've been trying to figure out how to edit numbers for recent calls I've received. For example, I will get a call from someone in France and it reads 33xxxxxxx. If select the number, iPhone tries to call it back as 33xxxxx, not +33xxxxxx so the call will fail. If I look at the details of the number, I can add it to a contact and edit it then but there is no option just to edit the number and dial it. The International Assist option only seems to add +1 to numbers (I'm in the US) if I was overseas dialing back. It doesn't seem to automatically add the + when I'm calling an international number. That makes sense because I'm not sure how it would know. Still, there has to be a way to edit numbers from the recents call list without adding them as contacts.
Anyone know the trick?

I have a related problem where my service provider uses its most expensive international rate if you use a + but has a much cheaper service if you use 019 instead. However when I travel abroad I need to use the + so all my entries in my contacts are currently +. I desperately need an edit before call function as is available on most phones. My service provider’s answer was to write the number down and enter it manually or to create double entries for each of my international contacts! Any better ideas?
I too have often wanted such a feature, that is you want to call back but edit the number. Doesn't seem to be available. So I do this to work around the problem. I created a contact called ztemp (to put it at the bottom of contact list), and any time I need to edit a number and call, I just add the number to that contact and edit it there. Only takes a second, so it's really not a big deal.
I agree! When dialing phone numbers in emails or displayed on web pages, it is often necessary to edit the number. Many UK numbers are written as +44 (0)20 7xxx xxxx. However the zero is only needed when not using +44. Dialing +44020xxx will cause the call to fail. The same applies to numbers listed as 4420xxxx without a "+". In short, there are many reasons why this function would be very very helpful... Anyone at Apple reading this? O.
To add a + to a number. This so far to my knowledge can only be done while editing a contact or adding a contact. No way at this time to type it in during a dialed number from keypad.
Instructions I am posting is how to add the + adding a new number to a contact
1. Go to Telephone - Contacts -Tap on contact of your choice - Tap on Edit
2. Tap on current number or add new phone number
If you look in the bottom left hand corner there is a +*# button. Press this. Now you have access to the + which can be added to a new number or edited into a current number.
@ Andrew: Right you are - but when clicking on a phone number in an email or on web page there's no option to add a contact or add the number to a contact - it just allows you to dial it. In effect it means - dialing a number you know will fail. Hanging up. Creating a contact adding the missing + or removing the extra (0), before being able to dial it... you may agree - that's a little long and boring. Ideal would be to offer to "edit before call" - which could in fact bring up an edit screen allowing to edit and then dial or add new contact or add number to existing contact... that would be useful. While in the phone book or telephone app - just a edit before call would be v. useful too... Maybe in iPhone 3.0??? 😉
