What is clear plastic item for?

Just got an iPod Touch today and wondering what the clear plastic item that is in the same bag as the earphones and the 'dock' looking item is for. Any answers will help, thanks.

Powerbook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Interesting, then how are you supposed to use the half of a dock?

It fits in the Apple Universal dock to make it the correct size for the touch.
