Safari appends .html to every attachment

Hi - I'm running Safari 3.1.2 on OS 10.5.4 on a 2x Quad core Mac Pro. Every time I try to download an attachment from my webmail site (Oceanic Time Warner) Safari appends .html to the download and I can't open the file. This happens with Word .doc files, with .pdf files - everything. I get a gymschedule.pdf.html in the download folder that won't open with anything.

If I use Firefox to open the mail and download, then everything is as it should be. So, I know the folks sending me these emails aren't somehow improperly encoding them. Seems like the problem is with Safari. I've made Preview the default pdf viewer, this doesn't fix anything. Nor does making Acrobat 8 (the version I have) the default change anything.

Suggestions?

I believe that this happens when the server in question (your webmail's server in this case) is not properly configured to identify MIME types. I suspect Firefox is guessing at the correct file types for you, while Safari is trusting the server, hence the difference in their behavior.

Have you tried changing the extensions of the files after downloading them in Safari? That is, changing the extensions from .doc.html or .pdf.html to just .doc or .pdf? Your Mac will probably ask if you really mean to change the extension and you should click the button to use the "new" extension. This works for me in similar situations.

Yes, but I have 5 mac users at my house, with Charter as the cable isp. We love safari, but that's an awful lot of annoying "delete .html" work. Since no other browser I have used (IE, Mozilla, Firefox) has this problem, and since Charter has less than no interest in my problem, and since the problem has been going on for years, can't Apple or someone come up with a simple fix? Instead of "guessing" that an .html is needed, can we set up some kind of default choice??

Hi Guys,
Just bought a Macbook pro 2.8 Ghz with Mac 10.5.5 and Safari 3.2. here is what the problem is and i would really appreciate some quick help from you experts out there

When ever i use a webmail and try to download an attachment by using the "download linked file as" option which i believe is equivalent to Save file as Option... here is the result in 3 differnt broswers

Safari - opens the save as dialogue box BUT gives me a default filename usually as viewmail.exe for word docs. I know i can rename the files but with long filenames and official document which have specific filenames it becomes very difficult to keep on renaming them. So basically i want safari to pick up the original filename of the attachment that it was sent with.

Firefox - Picks up the right information about the file name BUT does not give me the option to make a new subdirectory while trying to save

IE on a PC - works perfectly well - picks up the right filename and gives me the option to chose and create subfolders on the fly.

I need the solution for Safari as i really want to shift my work to the mac but small issues like these and many others are holding the full migration.

thanks
