iPod corrupt? Unknown error (1439)

My iPod had been working perfectly fine for a couple of months now. It has 80GB. When I plugged it in today, it had a popup that said my iPod is corrupt and needs to be restored or replugged. I did this for about 10 times and each time a pop up says: The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1439).

I ran into the same problem With my iPod Classic 80Gb, When I sync it to iTunes I get an error that say's: "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod.". Thats the error I get. when I try to restore it, I get the same error. once I unplug the ipod from the iMac it resets. Does anyone know whats going on with the iPod?

Try these steps....

*Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.

And if that still doesn't help try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes from restoring it.

Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. Complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.

*Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

My iPod won't go into disk mode. :S When I'm holding menu+play it just goes back to the normal menu screen. And the things in the link I've previously tried and it didn't work.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT:

I just plugged in my iPod and it said "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again." So I followed the instructions and unplugged then replugged in the iPod and then tried "Break up large transfers" like you said, but I only made a normal playlist of 2 songs and stuck it in, and they synced fine and are now in my iPod!

I'm hoping this means that my iPod is working. 🙂 Thankss.

Erk - Apologies, I had that wrong - it should be Select+Menu to reset then Select+Play for disk mode.

As for games not launching do you have lots of playlists? A while back I found my iPod getting erratic, loading some games but not others, or only playing them after a reset. I noticed it got worse as I added more playlists - better when I removed some. In the end I had a big clear out of most of my smart playlists - recreating some as static ones where more approapriate and deleting those that would appear on my iPod even though not selected to sync with it. Since then things have been much more stable.

What is 1439 and why does it plague us so? I've spent two days trying to get my iPod functioning again, and when I did the restore, I got this error message. I even changed the USB port I was using to the back of the tower. Still no results. I'm trying to avoid plunking down cash, either to fix it or get a new one. Any luck out there in the Land of Disrepair?

Go to 'oldapps.com' they have many old versions of iTunes .

I run 7.0.1.8 for my 4G U2 ipod and never update automatically .

Find the newest version you can run , or go back to the prev version that worked .

I'm amazed that they seem uninterested in letting the older iPods run properly in the newer versions of iTunes .
I'm not going to buy a new iPod because they look different or add one feature .

I, too, have been having this issue with two third generation iPods, lately. They've both gone south on me in the past week or two. I've gotten so many error codes I've lost track, but 1439 is the latest.
Problem is, the library I fill my iPods with is on a machine with Panther.3.9 on it, and the appropriate iTunes to go with it (can't remember the version number, at present). I can use TechToolPro on the old machine to wipe the drive at low-level, or I can use Disk Utility, but in each case, I get an iPod that hangs up in the process, somewhere. I am also getting varying reports on what size the iPods are; the 30G one showed up as 3.9G, earlier today, then later (and still is) showing as a 20G.
The 10G iPod has had similar numbers.
At the moment, the 10G unit only gives me the little graphic telling me to plug in the connector on the bottom. Problem is, it's already in there. The 30G unit earns me the 1439 code.

I have to say that, after twelve years of being an Apple cheerleader, the iPods have pretty much burnt me out on the concept of portable music. Something like this shouldn't be this much work.

I have the same problem everyone else seems to be having. I had a great, cheap 4G mp3 player that I gave away when I bought my new iPod Classic 80G. This thing is a piece of crap. I bought one and got all of my new music on it (took 5 days)and listened to it in the mean time. Then I went to put the last of the info on it and BAM! the thing froze. When I finally got the thing unfrozen, all my music had been lost and the thing corrupted. Nothing would fix it. I took it back and got another. The next one was worse. It did not work from the start and said it had zero KG available. What's that about? The next day I took that one back the next day and this one let me download about 3 cd's and had the same problem. This 1493 error about corruption. I am getting pretty upset with Apple about this lousy product that costs seemingly a fortune and is not as user friendly as other brands. I am not sure whether I should take this back for another or just get my money back. I am tired of this. I have neglected my school work and social activities with my main focus on getting my iPod to work.
