NO incoming call while on Internet !!!!

Hi,

my brand new 3G does NOT allow me to receive calls while on the net via 3G (GPS, surfing, receiving mails, or ...)

I just call the Apple Support Center and they told me :

IT IS A FEATURE !
You have to choose, or you use it as a phone or you use it as an Internet client !

I can NOT believe what I hear !

3G offers the speed and the comfort of ADSL, while the iPhone3G just offers the confort of the old analogic modem !

They told me that they would maybe do something for this IF many complaints are arised for that.
Please react 😉

All together we will make our iPhone3G perfect

Frankly, I'm not sure why Apple Support told you that, but I certainly can receive calls when on the internet (even as a page in Safari is loading - the call just interrupts that). Once I am on a call (received or sent) I can tap the home button and continue to browse the internet or check email.

Note that for this feature to work, you must be on the 3G network - if you are on an EDGE network, simultaneous voice and data is not possible (which may have been the confusion on the tech's part, since the 1st iPhone was EDGE only).

Hope this helps...

neuroanatomist,

you are right, I was not connected with the 3G, but certainly with EDGE.
Nevertheless, when surfing with my Nokia E90 (3G, EDGE or whatever) the Internet connectin was interrupted during the voice call and then re-established after.

My mobile was ALWAYS reachable as "phone".

It is NOT the case with my iPhone3G ! This is NOT Acceptable.

Hi

If you are on the Internet with EDGE and IF you are actively surfing the web. Your phone (iPhone, Nokia, Windows Mobile) should not kick you off for the call. Most phones will direct the caller to VoiceMail. However if your browser is open and you're idle (reading an article, etc) then your activity will be interupted for the call.

Some phones are designed NOT to answer calls when in Internet or Email.

The iPhone will interupt your web session if the connection is Idle.

I can't decide which irritates me more, when I am trying to look something up real quick and I get a phone call and it kicks me out of the browser, or when I am just browsing for something and I miss a phone call because it kicked it to voicemail? Both have happened to me.

I have a first gen iPhone and it's always made me wonder. I had hoped the 3G would have solved this because it would be nice to use my bluetooth headset to answer the phone and then jump back to the still loading web page if I wanted to while STILL using the phone.

I guess you really can't please everyone all the time.

How is it possible ?

Did you adapt some parameters somewhere ?
Currently, on mine, it can NOT be ejected from what it is ongoing.
If I'm calling, then I can NOT go to the Internet (no GPS, neither surfing, asking weather, sending/receiving mails, ...) and if it's looking to locate me, then I'm totally isolated.

Such a hightech tool should at least be able to do both, or at least :
- suspend ongoing transfert while giving the opportunity to catch the call
- send a signal to the caller, other then "tell it to my ****** voicemail"
Because, in that specific case, thecaller does NOT know if you mobile is OFF, if you are simply unreachable or ...

I really hope that in the coming new firmware, Apple will adapt this.

It just is. I have done nothing special. When I am browsing, if a call comes in, the phone rings. If I answer the call, I can click the home button, then go back to Safari while talking on the phone. If I initiate the call, I can still click the home button, then launch Safari, Weather, or whatever app I want, and pull data during the conversation.

But, as I stated above, you MUST be on 3G for that to work. Previously, you stated you were using EDGE - EDGE *_does not_* support simultaneous voice and data transmission.

I'm not as good in mobile communication protocols.

It is, indeed, possible that I was using EDGE and NOT 3G while I missed the calls.
I'll try this later in a location where I'm sure 3G is available or at least used by the iPhone.

My NOKIA E90 was more sensible to the 3G ! This is then, maybe, the reason why I didn't had this problem before !

Thanks for these precisions

MIne works perfectly too -- am doing it right now and chatting with someone on the phone off and on while being put on hold. Strong 3G signal.

You MUST be on a 3G signal and not EDGE. Sometimes your iPhone might default to EDGE and never change the 3G icon until a few minutes later if it is still :sort of: detecting the 3G tower -- nonetheless -- try it in an area that has better 3G service, you should see you can surf and talk...
