If you connect it to your computer while in DFU mode it should be recognized by iTunes and should automatically restore. If it doesn't we need more information to help you.

What kind of computer?
What operating system?
What version of iTunes?
What kind of USB ports on the computer (1.1 or 2.0)?
Are you using a USB hub?
What other USB devices do you have connected?
What error message are you getting on the computer (if any)?

Alternatively, you can go to http://www.apple.com/support and search for tech notes that might help.

We still need the rest of the information:

Is iTunes installed?
What version of iTunes?
What kind of USB ports on the computer (1.1 or 2.0)?
Are you using a USB hub?
What other USB devices do you have connected?

Also, launch Task Manager (CTRL SHIFTESC). Click on the Processes tab, then the label at the top of the Image Name column to sort the list. Then look down the list for AppleMobileDeviceService.exe. Is it there?

FIRST look for AppleMobileDeviceService.exe as I described. If it is running try plugging into a USB port on the BACK of the computer rather than the front. Also unplug any other USB devices except for keyboard and mouse.

How did it get into DFU mode? Was it spontaneous, or did you do it intentionally?

If AppleMobileDeviceService.exe is NOT listed in the Task Manager go to the Control Panel and open Administrative Tools, then Services. Find Apple Mobile Device and double click it. It should not be running (because you did not see it in the task list). Click the Start button. Wait for it to start and try connecting the iPhone again. If it isn't in the Services screen you must completely uninstall iTunes, then reinstall it from a freshly downloaded copy from http://www.apple.com/itunes. The uninstall instructions are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925?viewlocale=en_US

A few other people have experienced something similar. A guy at iPhone linux suggested this fix, which apparently helped some:

UPDATE/FIX:
Put it into DFU mode.
Hold down Sleep and Home
count from 1001 to 1010 out loud
release the Sleep button
repeat the count.
release home button.
iphone is now back into DFU mode.
iTunes should now recognise the phone and ask if you want to reinstall the firmware.

Hope this helps/works for you! :]
