OK, so after waiting in line for 3 hours I got my nice new 3G phone and what do I find? All of a sudden I am having horrible dropped call problems. The first was in my office which had rock solid coverage using the original iPhone and never dropped a call there.
I understand that 3G does not penetrate buildings as well but then I am driving on my normal commute home while participating in a normal conference call. The number dialed, the route taken, and the position of the phone in the car is the exact same (same bluetooth headset too). On my old iPhone no problem for the whole drive home. On the 3G it dropped at 3 separate locations!!!
This *****! I will need to revert to the old phone! Any ideas? I would hate to have to turn off 3G every time I get in my car to go home. BTW, yes the route taken goes in and out of 3G coverage areas.
I am having the same problem. I have had the phone for a couple of weeks and I haven't had any dropped calls until a couple of days ago. Now, atleast 50% of my call get dropped or I get a "call failed" message when trying to make a call even though I have 3-4 on 3G.
The phone will also bounce from 3G to Edge to No Service and then back to 3G. Again this is with 3-4 bars of 3G. The phone works fine if I turn off 3G, but that defeats the purpose of having a 3G iPhone.
Not sure where you are regionally, but I am in the Tampa area about 20 miles due West in what the AT&T 3G map is showing very strong coverage. I have only had my 16G 3G since Friday and have also experienced two dropped calls on 3G and 2 on EDGE in a store where I used to be able to connect with Verizon without problems. Only being a mile from the AT&T store where I purchased my phone (returned a gratis case accessory for buying a car charger and JawBone 2) to report what I had experienced on their Service. The response was that they are still experiencing some issues with 3G in some areas, but putting up more and more towers and filters to correct this. I do recall the manager last week mentioning that 3G doesn't seem to work as well indoors as does EDGE... and recall in reading thru some APPLE literature that 3G may not work as well indoors. They even had some 3G issues at their own store, which again is in a designated strong 3G area. As for dropping two calls in a store a mile away from them while on EDGE svc, they were visibly surprised... and really had no response other than maybe that something had altered within the store. With that being said, I went to the APPLE Store at Intl. Mall at Tampa, went deep inside the bowels of a ground floor store (two story) building and deliberately made a call from my 3G to check out my connectivity on EDGE and didn't have any issues. I only spoke for a few, but at least I was able to connect.
So while i am thinking the connection issues remain in AT&T's court, I cannot explain your being able to connect with your legacy iPhone and not the 3G? Thru process of elimination, it may be an APPLE issue with the 3G? One other variable and I haven't owned a BlueTooth device in a couple of yr's, but I was on my Jawbone 2 when I dropped my call... so not being familiar with BlueTooth, much less current BlueTooth technology, unless a BlueTooth device automatically ends a call when it loses a signal, that may be the culprit? Although you did mention using the same BlueTooth device I think? personally, when I opted to return to Verizon in early '05, I had heard about AT&T's questionable network, so I had both a AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and All Tel salespersons take a walk with me in an area of that mall that had a reputation of dropping calls. All had what they claimed to be comparable wireless phones of quality reception... and Verizon's LG8000 was the only one who didn't drop a call in that location.
Its not my bluetooth (used same on on both phones). From past experience the bluetooth increased call reliability as the phone wasn't being moved around and it kept a better signal.
I think the problem with dropped calls is that the iPhone or AT&T does not switch well between EDGE and 3G. If I keep the new phone on EDGE then I don't have the dropped call issue (that defeats the purpose of having this phone). Its only on 3G where the signal drops off to nothing that I have observed the problem. For example while sitting in my office I get from 0-2 bars on 3G. If I force EDGE I get a full 5 bars. So I think when I talk in my office (not using bluetooth) and I move into a position of 0 bars the call is lost even though there is supper strong EDGE signal.
I wish the phone could switch better between the services so I would be less likely to drop a call
I'm having the same issue- frequent dropped calls and failed calls. It's driving me crazy.
I switched from a Treo on Sprint where I very very rarely had failed or dropped calls. I've had more calls dropped or failed in the last 10 days than I probably did in the last 5 years on Sprint.
I'm nearing my 14day return point on the phone. I don't want to return it- I love it. But the service is horrible. And waiting for AT&T to "fix" it by adding more 3G towers or whatever is not going to sit well with me if I have the same issue in 6 months because at that point I'll be locked in to my 2 year contract.
I'm frustrated and I can't figure out what to do, but with all these dropped calls or failed calls I can't decide if I need to return it and wait for better firmware or what. (Sometimes even when I'm standing in the same place after just completing a call all of a sudden I get repeated call failures- talk about maddening!)
I agree waiting for the more towers is not the answer. I also do not hold out much hope for a software fix (unless 2.1 does something). I am considering switching 3G off when I know I will be in a poor reception area. That way I won't have to worry about dropped calls
i have a first gen iPhone with 2.0 software (not 3G issue).
i live in suburban detroit and previously had verizon.
i never had a dropped call with my treo.
with the iPhone i dropped calls BUT after my upgrade to 2.0
i now drop calls every day, in the same spots as i travel.
it seems as if the call can't be handed to the next cell tower.
I had the 1st gen iPhone for about 9 months. In that time, I experienced maybe 5 dropped calls.
Since getting the 3G phone on July 11, I experience at least 4-5 dropped calls PER DAY!!
This is extremely frustrating!
Replacing the sim card DID NOTHING.
Replacing the phone DID NOTHING.
Honestly, I am seriously thinking about ditching AT&T/Apple (Since both parties are so quick to blame the other) and never going back. This is just unacceptable.
I started another thread on the same topic. No reliable 3G coverage in and around Chicago - Dropped calls all the time - AT&T and Apple finger pointing at each other. Switched SIM / switched phone and SIM - same deal.
Please call 1-800-MY-IPHONE and make them know something needs to be done.
I used to own a Samsung Blackjack, which was 3G. I had issues with it dropping calls while I was driving, and contacted AT&T, and they told me that it had to do with the hand-over from tower to tower. I switched to an iPhone, dropped like 3 calls total in the year i owned it, and just switched to an iPhone 3G. Now, i drop call all the time. Seems like a similar problem. AT&T was able to fix the problem with my Blackjack through updates.... now we just have to wait for Apple...
I'm in metropolitan Chicago also. I'm a few blocks from Wrigley Field, and my 3G registers between 1-2 bars in this area.
I switched from Verizon to AT&T for since I wanted the iPhone, but encountered more dropped calls in the first two days of use, than I ever had with Verizon over a two year period.
Problems with calls being dropped or calls failing are common now.
My phone is a 3g with 2.01. Was in a restaurant today with two people both has at&t phones. 1 was a razor, the other was a iphone edge. I had call failure when I walked in - then no signal. They both had at&t with full bars.
Yeah I hear you guys. I live in NJ and every since I upgraded my 1st generation to version 2.0 I drop calls like crazy and very low bars in general. I upgraded to 2.0.1 and the same problem.
had the same problem with dropping calls when iphone switches between 3g and other networks....i turned off the 3g network in general settings and had no problems since then...try it. just a quick fix until att fixes the problem.
