for over a week now i have not been able to get to the music store, as it loads it comes up with a sign that says "iTunes could not connect to the music store. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

I have an active internet connection! i tried all the things apple online support sugessted, none of it worked. then i went to my local apple store they were rude and didnt help me, then i called phone tech support thinking i would have one free call before i would have to pay 50 dollars, but apartely your one free call expires a month after you buy your ipod. so i have no other options unless i want to pay 50 bucks.... does anyone have any advice.

apple company is mean.

If you have any probs with getting into you music store after downloading a new version of itunes you have to configure your personal firewall in Norton. To do this - Open you Norton Internet Security, click on Status & Settings, go down to Personal Firewall and click on Configure...Click on the Programs tab at the top, in Manual Program Control, scroll down until you see itunes, click on the arrow next to it (it might say BLOCK ALL right now)...Change this to PERMIT ALL... and you should be good to go!! good luck all!

I have the same problem, my home setup has not changed and iTunes worked for the last year until this past month or so. It connects to iTunes fine, everything works, but when you go to purchase anything, it gives you a message box saying, "iTunes could not connect to the music store. The network connection was reset. Make sure your network connection is active and try again." If my network connection wasn't active, I wouldn't be browsing around iTunes previewing the songs I want to purchase, now would I? Any help would be appreciated, this is very frustrating. I would expect this error to be of high priority since it is preventing revenue... Thanks.

try the above or what I have also done is to change a Windows operating system file. This could cause you problems if not done correctly.

Using Windows Explorer move to the following folder 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc'. In this folder is file called 'hosts'. Open it using Wordpad.

In this file on my pc there was one long line. At the end of this line was ''. is I believe the web address for the music store. What '' is doing is telling the pc to look for the web address only on the computer rather than the internet. By remove this section of the line and saving the changes I can now access the music store without any problems.
    good luck

This one didn't work for me on XP Pro. I'm on Norton and even when it was turned off i could not hit the music store.

what if these don't work? I'm on my last workaround. Shut off Norton, Shut off Windows Firewall. and still can't access the music store.

Do all of you with problems have IE installed?

I understand the iTMS needs that to connect.
  • Albert Maruggi Level 1 Level 1
    yes, I have IE

rats, I don't know what to tell you then.

I was going to ask you to tracert or ping but it times out on me, and I can connect to iTMS OK, so I don't know what's up.

Something changed, on your side or Apple's or's just a matter of finding out what.
Maybe somebody more savvy than I will come along and have a good idea.

I'm on wireless and I have to go reset my linksys router sometimes and unplug my wireless adapter to get things going....wireless still has a lot of kinks in it...

Sometimes b noir has advised turning everything off at night and trying again in the morning, and it's not sounding like a bad idea just now!

I too am in the same boat. I use Firefox and I have checked the connectivity of my DSL modem and still iTunes can not access the Music Store. The fact that I can access other On-line Music Stores confuses me even more.

Given the level of this problem and the fact the it has a direct impact on revenues for Apple, will they put techs on the issue and come up with a solution? I see nothing that is escalating this major problem on the iTunes support site?

The "host" file in here contains a line of data you can read if opened with Wordpad. At the very end of the string, delete all text containing something along the lines of "apple". You'll know what I mean when you see it.

Anyway, save the changes to the file and restart iTunes. Music Store should now work properly.

This is a different problem, I connect to the iTMS, it will not let me purchase anything. I always put off download new updates, until I encountered this problem. I downloaded the latest version, completely re-installed, and it still didn't fix the problem. It must be something on Apple's side. I am running no virus protection, no Norton Internet Security, and my software firewall is turned off. I hope this information helps. Also, is Apple aware of this problem? How can I contact them directly? Complaints will generate awareness. Thanks.

    Hi all,

I too have the same problem connecting to the iTunes music store. My IP address from my ISP has recently changed to a range of This may have once been a blacklisted IP range. I can connect with my dialup account, it has a different range. Firewall or not, hosts file, nothing else I've tried helps.

Others who are having the same problem connecting, what range is your IP in? Is it in the 70 or 72 range?

I am having the same problem. I don't use IE, I use Firefox and have tried everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. The supposed 'support' email help is pathetic; you are put on an endless loop of non-solutions. The site itself is unhelpful. And I absolutely refuse to pay support so they can help me buy music at their store.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?
