Converting AVCHD video files to MPEG2 files

I have a G5 (non intel processor) Mac and using iMovie08. I have recorded HD footage with my new Sony HDR-SR11 camcorder. I have since learned that HD (also known as AVCHD)footage does not upload into iMovie08 on a non-intel processor mac. Nor are the files understandable to the (non intel processor) Mac.
I can get the Sony HD to show as "No Name". But cannot read the footage.

So, my question is now, how do I convert the footage I have taken already - AVCHD video files to MPEG2 files??

I own MPEG Stremclip (did not work). But I do not own any other editing software.

Anyone know how to or have done so?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

G5, Laptop, iPhone too

Trying it now, thanks for the lead. I will let you know how it works.

Another attached question. There are several folders and files in the Sony HD.

AVCHD (Main Folder) >
BDMV (Folder) >
INDEX.BDM (File)
MOVIEOBJ.BDM (File)
CLININF (Folder) > 00000.CPI - 00013.CPI (files)
PLAYLIST (Folder) > 00000.MPL (File)
STREAM (Folder) > 00000.MTS - 000013.MTS (Files)

The software you recommended - Voltaic - only recognized the .MTS files. Are those the only ones needed for conversion?
