JVC GR-HD1 Compatibility

I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I (some years ago) purchased a JVC GR-HD1 video camera, before I knew of it's incompatibility with Apple's FCP. Well, I have quite a bit of mini-DV film shot in HD that I need to capture and edit with MBP and FCP 6.04. But, despite changing video-capture parameters a dozen times, trying to find the right combination I've had no luck. I don't know what HD format the camera records in. Does anyone know a work around for this "incompatibility" problem?

My son is an aspiring film director/producer, but I'm just a surgeon. So... anyone that can give me a solution gets a free appendectomy (should they develop an appendicitis:)

MBP 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.4), 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Just a quick reply to my own problem for any interested. I found a nice work-around solution. It surprises me, but iMovie captures the HD video just fine. I can convert it and save it in a file XML or Quicktime and then edit it with FCP. Don't know why iMovie should be more functional in this regard as opposed to the professional video software FCP??

Hi all,

With this camera I have found that if you set the switch on the inside of the display panel to DV, and in the menu set the firewire output to auto, you can capture video in Final Cut or iMovie. But there are some steps:

1. Connect everything properly and turn the camera on,
2. Push play before opening iMovie or FCP
2. Click on FCP or iMovie,
3. While the camera is still playing, set your capture settings to 720p30 HDV or the Apple Intermediate Codec if you have not already done so,
4. Open the log/capture window in fcp, or capture as you normally would in iMovie.

I tired it but it wont work. i turned on the camera and plug in the firewire, set them to dv and firewire output to auto, played the tape before opening fcp then set the following settings, then open the log/capture and it says the unable to initlize capture device.

Any others who can jump in and help me solve this problem
