I posted in this discussion about having problems with 3G reception and at the time didn't know just how bad a problem it was for me. I can barely make calls when using 3G. I had to dial a number 4 times before actually getting a useable connection - which ended up having to turn off 3G to do! I keep having trouble when dialing a number that I get some weird sound, hear no ringing, and if I talk it echoes back to my earpiece. ***???!

This phone is no better than the original iPhone with 2.0 firmware and I have nobody to complain to about it. Apple won't acknowledge it as a problem and ATT won't either.

iPhone 3G - Half the calls. Half the price.

LOL! Unfortunately, it's the truth.

I've changed my "bars" to see the dbm values, and I never get better values than -79 dbm, even outside, next to cell towers, anywhere I go in the middle of Munich. In my house, I get values between -97 an -113. When I try to make a call, the signal quickly changes to 2G.

Report from sweden. Telia is the provider for iPhone and have a very mature 3g network. I have the same problem as everybody else. According to telia customer service it is no use to swap the iphone to another because it is the same problem with all of them. They are currently in discussion with Apple about the problem. They assume a software update will solve the problems with bad reception. I got compensated 200SEK (a month of unlimited data service).

My friend got the same information and the same compensation.

Got the impression that they are very well aware of the problems.

I expect that for some folks, this may be a firmware issue, and for many it may be a network issue. For a small number it may be a hardware issue.

It certainly is extremely disappointing to have to deal with dropped calls, but otherwise the device is fantastic, and I expect that the dropped call problems can mostly be corrected without device returns.

Here's hoping that is true.

I just got off an hour+ long call with ATT and Apple. The Apple call was first which didn't amount to anything and they transferred me to ATT customer service. ATT CS ended up giving me a $50 credit and than passed me to ATT tech support which checked everything under the sun to try and find a possible cause for my inability to make calls reliably, poor signal strength, etc. According to them I am in an area that should have the same or better signal strength/quality as 2G, but it's not the case.

On 2G, signal is -71 and on 3G it's -95 to -103 (fluctuates a lot). They couldn't find a tower problem or provisioning problem, but still suspect it may be a tower problem and are looking further into it. If they come back and say they were unable to find anything, they suggested that I may need to go and swap my SIM card (ATT store or Apple, I'm not sure which).

So I guess if anyone is having problems, call Apple and/or the provider and at least make your case. Good luck.

Edge and 3G issues - Home to Work
1) Doesn't work in my house. Acts like my previous XM radios and the reception dies all together.
2) Leaving house in Prince William Co, VA - 1 to 5 bars Edge
3) On bus throughout the countless stops - Edge/3G swaps; Internet drops between swaps (Don't know about phone. Don't get many calls.)
4) I-95 HOV towards Washington DC - Same as 3 but lesser swaps
5) Washington DC at work - 3G works until I go into the basement floor and lose all signal
6) At work - Need to go into the rock garden outside the cafeteria to get 3G reception

Second note: Let's mention the GPS. It doesn't work well when your bus is driving 70 mph. It's pretty funny when the little blue dot flies off the road into the garden and makes it's way back onto the HOV.

After having 3G off for about a week (I had calls to make), I turned it on again today. 2-3 bars at my home in the city of San Francisco. I received a call, spoke for about 5 seconds.... CALL FAILED. Still 3 bars. Call back...say "hello", CALL FAILED. again and again.

I switched back to EDGE (turned off 3G) and the phone works fine.

How does a product get released that is not able to perform its most basic function? A phone should be able to make and receive phone calls!
