reformatting ipod from windows to mac

I recently dug up my old 3rd generation dock connector ipod, which is formatted to windows, and can't get it to format to my new macbook so that I can restore it to factory settings and start from scratch.

It will show up in itunes and on my desktop when connected with USB, however when I try to restore the ipod it tells me that I need to connect using firewire to do so... when I disconnect the USB and reconnect with firewire, the computer won't recognize that I've connected anything. The ipod's display says that its connected. Any ideas?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

It is true that the 3G needs to be connected via FireWire, because it does not charge over USB.

Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode. Here are the button combinations and how to use them

If it still does not work with iTunes, run Disk Utility and try to reformat ( Erase ) the iPod. Then run iTunes to see if it is recognized. If so, use the Restore button in iTunes.
