Downloading has the slows

Suddenly, downloading on my MBPro 2.33 is extremely slow. I tried to download a flick off archive.org and what took minutes will take hours. It seems to be downloading at 56k speeds. Uploading seems no different.

I tried different browsers but no change.

Has some octopus attached itself to my system. Is there a software that can catch these things? Is there anything I can do with my system as is to maybe flush things?

Thanks,
elmer

Thanks for the reply and info! I gotta book mark that dslreports site.

Download speed: 205 Kb/s
Upload speed: 427 Kb/s
Latency: 20 ms
There was a warning: "ISP upload compression was detected YOur upload speeds may be inaccurate."

I have TimeWarner cable. How do I reset my modem and/or router?

Btw, even pages take a while loading...

Wow, terrible download speed! 😟

Remove all power and cables from your modem and Router for 5 Minutes.

Power up Modem, wait 2 minutes.

Power up Router, wait 2 minutes.

Try the Speed Test again.

Might even be your ISP, has it always been this way?

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

applejack AUTO

Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

The 5 things it does are...

Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.

First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! 🙂

Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

How much free space on your HD?

Great info!
Unfortunately, I'm sitting in a friend's apt because befoe getting your message I tried unplugging the moden and waiting, then when I plugged back in, only one modem light blinked and I couldn't connect to the server. Yikes! I'm thinking it's the modem which I'll replace tomorrow. Either way I'll get the Applejacks for future use, and give an update so you won't worry. 😉

You have been fabulously generous with your time and info, thank you, sir!
