Unable to restore - 1340 error

My wife just bought a new nano to go with our new imac. It swtiched on OK, but problems began when we tried to sync it with iTunes. We plugged it in and there was a bit of difficulty with it being recognized. However once recognized it needed to restore. iTunes downloaded software, I clicked the restore button, the process began, but each time was unable to complete claiming a 1340 error. iTunes is up to date, I have reset the ipod, I even tried it on my old PC. Nothing has worked. Do I just send back the nano? Or is there a way to make it work?

Thanks

2.66ghz imac, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Unfortunately I don't have an answer. I'm currently in the middle of a repeat 1349 error. I have an old ipod nano 1st gen. It was working great until I decided to put 4 songs off of a CD on it today. The syncronize button now has the ipod trashed. It also won't restore. I have read various threads. I tried restoring it, uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. Toggling the hold swith on one while trying to restore and off once with the same 1349 error. I would love to take it to a service center but the nearest one is 70 miles away. All I can say at this point, buy a zune.
