Boy, you really are **ed off. It's because of the 886 posts, and many years of working with Macs in a perfectly satisfactory way without Spaces, but being aware of the optional third-party add-on it used to be under another name ("multiple desktops"?), that I know Spaces is totally pointless. If if gets in your way, don't use it, you can still do everything you need to do.
Reading the responses I had to check to see what discussion group I wondered into. You've been told in 2 different ways to just turn it off. Wow.
I like Spaces. I use it quite a bit on my work machine and at home.
I know what you mean about the transition. As far as I can tell there is no way to turn the transition off.
I'd love to see a way to turn transitions off. (I mean just switch, no movement, which is what you, too, are after.)
Tom, I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you misread my original post.
I was not asking how to turn off spaces, or seeking opinions on whether or not I should use spaces, I am simply trying to turn of the "transition effect" to prevent motion sickness. Currently the transition is a sliding effect from one Space to another. I would like a fast dissolve or no effect at all.
I'm afraid there does not appear to be anyway of turning off the sliding transition in spaces. There's no option to turn it off or to change it to another effect.
I use spaces all the time as I have a 15" MacBook Pro and it's incredibly useful to have a screen dedicated to e-mail and IM and another for Safari and two other screens for applications. There's just not enough screen real estate for all those windows. I think Spaces is one of the most useful user features of Mac OS X.
Maybe we should send in a feature request to Apple? I used to use some third party software to do the same before Spaces was released and it had a selection of transitions or none at all.
Personally, I'm now used to the transitions but as I don't have multiple monitors perhaps I'm being spared the motion sickness!
