"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved" - Error 1450

I get this error when I try to update my library:
"The iTunes Music Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-1450)."
I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTune for about 7 times but it keeps coming back.

What can I do?

Error 1450 is a Windows error meaning "Insufficient Resources".

Lots of things can cause this, but here's a quick check: After you get this error, Open the Task Manager and click the Performance tab. Look in the bottom right corner for the Kernel Memory. If the paged value is around or above 160000, then that's your problem. Look here for a fix: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304101

But this is generally a system problem somewhere, it won't be a problem with iTunes itself.

Otto42 - You are right about this. It is a system resource problem (at least in my case). I have not implemented the registry changes, but I have noticed that if I reboot the machine and open only itunes the library file will save.

I may have to look over the settings I've implemented to run Protools. Protools is the priority though, so if iTunes needs a different configuration perhaps I'll create the dual boot system I should have from the beginning.

Thanks for the information!

Otto42, YOU ARE A GENIUS!!!!!!! This error has been bugging me for 2 weeks and I think it's fixed now. My library files show today's date so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Even though my Kernel Memory paged value was only 50,000, I did the first registry edit from the link you had in your message. I will wait and see if I need to do the second one.

THANK YOU!!!!!

p.s. I only started getting this -1450 message after I upgraded to iTunes 6.1 and got a new iPod 30GB video/photo. I wonder if that has anything to do with this.

I wish I could say either the Reg changes or disabling McAfee anti-virus worked for me, but I am still stuck.

I am running 6 on a Win2K Server. My account is admin and I have confirmed it is not a permissions issue or a lock file issue.

I receive the -1450 error in the following conditions:

1. iTunes attempts to save library

2. iTunes attempts to download a purchase (actually, it appears to occur after the file is downloaded, but it does not save the file to disk, although it thinks it downloaded the file)

3. iTunes attempts to rip a CD. This is a random occurrence whereby the rip stops at some random place mid-song. I may have it happen immediately, then work for a few songs, then happen again. I have been able to rip 2-3 CDs before seeing the error, whereas other times it seems to occur with the first song and I retry a few dozen times before it works again. I have used 2 different CD drives.

4. iTunes attempts to sync with the iPod. In this case, I randomly receive the error that I need to reset my iPod to factory defaults. However, after a day of waiting, it works again. I actually tried to reset the iPod to factory defaults when I was first presented with this problem--it caused a write error and crashed the iPod to the point where it could not even be recovered by the Apple staff at the Apple store; they gave me a new replacement unit.

I have to think this is a programming issue on the iTunes side, specific to Win2K (and possibly NT). Has anyone had this problem on an XP box?

My next step is to move all my files and software over to my XP box and see if I receive the same errors. Should that fail, I'll use a non-iTunes product until a software update is released.

Anyone from Apple checking into the -1450 error issues?

Otto42, YOU ARE THE MAN OF 2006!!!! I dont know exactly when this error occurs the first time, but know its fixed! Even ALL of my lags i have had the last few weeks are fixed!

I had to import both registry keys and now everything is working allright. <=more than this!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

p.s. know thinking about servers...

I also got it and I run XP.

None of those reg tweeks I found above worked. But then I decieded to double-check some questionable tweeks I found on a form a week or so ago. I found one that sounded especially pertinant at http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks11.htm .

On the tweek LargeSystemCache, it said that that tweek offers little to no value except to servers, and it renders many Windows XP applications and drivers unusable. The key is located at [HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] . To undo it, simply set the value to 0. It worked for me.

This style of memory management may also be the reason the person running Windows Server is having trouble. Disabling this key might work for that person, too, but it might undermine the reason s/he is running Windows Server in the first place.

These two registry tweaks may have fixed my 1450 problem, too. The first tweak made it seem fixed at first, but it came back after a few minutes. After the second tweak, it seems like the problem's gone away. I even re-enabled Norton AntiVirus auto-protect (with exclusions to the iPod, iTunes, and all my music folders).

A few interesting notes, too...

-This is only happening on my girlfriend's Windows XP Media Center Edition laptop, not on my XP Professonal desktop.

-Turning NAV on and off never really seemed to affect anything.

-On both of the machines I have iTunes on, all of my folders always show a solid green square in the "Read Only" checkbox, even if I change it and check back a second later. I can't remember if a non iTunes'ed computer acts like that, either. So I don't know if making those files non-read-only (as was suggested elsewhere) even works.

I will re-post if I start receiving 1450 errors again.
