PC2-6400 DDR2 for my MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 2.4. I noticed recently that some companies are now making 800Mhz ram, PC2-6400 DDR2.
1. Since my MBP has a bus speed of 800Mhz, can I upgrade to the new RAM and get a performace benefit?
2. If so, will my MBP recognize it without some kind of reconfiguration?

Thanks!

Well, as a consolation, if you have a new generation MBP, you can always use the new 4GB 667 DIMMs. You won't get the high speed, but you will get 8 whopping GB of RAM in there...

There was an article in here awhile back, where someone reported results of testing the new big DIMMs on the Feb'80 MBP and confirming that the system was successfully able to handle the full 8GB, although this is not officially supported by Apple. The Penryn is really a dual 32/64 bit processor.

If the bus speed is given as 800 MHz, I wonder why it would not handle 800 MHz memory?

[This pretty picture|http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/15i nMacBookPro 0802/Articles/ProductDeveloperNote.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40007348-BCIGAACJ] will give you an idea of why the bus is 800MHz but memory has to run at 667MHz, until the supporting chipset gets upgraded to the Montevina platform, sometime later in this year. Same thing goes for [the 17 in MBP, Feb'08 edition|http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/17i nMacBookPro_0802/Articles/ProductDeveloperNote.html].

Erm..not really. 😟 The guy who tested 8GB RAM concluded:

"Unfortunately after running the MacBook Pro for almost 24 hours, it isn’t looking good. One of the key scenarios for wanting to move to 8GB isn’t working worth a ****. I’m talking about virtualization.

...Assuming by pulling the memory out of the box, things settle down and perform properly, then Apple, VMWare, Parallels and Kingston have some work to do. At that point it would not be apparent if the 4GB sticks are in fact faulty, or OS X needs a fix, or Fusion and/or Parallels need a fix. This would certainly be out of my hands for any further testing."

Wish it did work though. 😟
