Slow restart and Punch Home Design Software AND Vuescan..

Last week I downloaded the software update for Apple.. iPhoto, HP Printer and I think that's it.. I hooked up an external (Seagate-Maxtor) drive, and all of a sudden it takes 6 minutes to restart.. I bought a computer program that was going to take 8 hours to download.. (Punch Home Design Studio for Mac actually..)

AND finally I had to purchase Vuescan in order for my HP2210 All in One Scanner device would work. Well, that's not working anymore either..

Tonite:
I deleted the software for the External HD and unplugged it
I removed the Vuescan software
I cancelled the Punch download until I can figure out what went wrong..

Any thoughts?

Thank you..

The large Home Design software download...
...should be available as a CD. If so, get it.

Be sure their software is correct for the
computer version you have. If you have a
PPC Mac, and the software is for an Intel
Mac, then you may have some issues.

The HP web site has their latest drivers for
all in one print/scan/fax/copy devices. I have
one and got a suitable driver from them direct.
And it was free. (GutenPrint is another option.)

There is some info in a second link in this page;
in addition to a driver you may or not need:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/hpprinterdriver11.html

The external enclosed hard disk drive should not
require extra software to use it with a Mac. If it
did require reformatting, for a specific purpose
for use with a Mac, and you desired it so, the
Disk Utility in applications> utilities folder could
be used to reformat to HFS+.

•The computer's OS may have been trying to
Index the external computer. You should be
able to have the Mac OS X ignore that drive.

{Have you tried using the bootable installer's
version of Disk Utility to 'repair disk' and also
to 'repair disk permissions' on the Mac's HDD?
I rarely do that; but do start in SafeBoot and
then repair disk permissions, then restart.}

If basic maintenance has not been done, to
repair permissions is an early first step; and
the computer's own DU is a thing to use for
repairing permissions before and after installs.

There may be some other issue behind the
set of symptoms you have noticed. These
would require more information in order to
proceed.

Is the printer using Ethernet or USB to connect
to the computer? Is the external drive a USB or
is it a FireWire enclosed drive? What was its
purpose in the configuration you are setting up?

And, which iMac do you have? If it is an iMac G4,
then you are in the correct forum area. The name
of each section is above the topics with it; and it
also is a hot link to a main list of each iMac area.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

edited to add driver info link.

Thank you for your response. I have an iMac with Leopard, all updated with the latest updates.

The Punch software finally did finish downloading.. it took 15 hours!! But I open it and it runs beautifully. At the time, I had the MAXTOR eternal drive plugged in - not thinking that would have been a problem.. but it has been suggested to me today, that it could have been an issue.

The Vuescan still doesn't work - so I am going to try going to HP as you suggested to see if that works.

I have a friend that remotely took a look at my computer to check the slowness, and it seemed to be set up ok now.

I'm going to try the HP download and see if the scanner works..

The printer (HP 2210 All-In-One) is USB

If the HP download doesn't work - I may do the Disk Utility..

Something is making my computer struggle at restart.. there must be a conflict somewhere, and it must be something that was downloaded last week. The scanner worked at 8:00am... then I got all these update notices, (can't remember but I think one was from HP... then poof - no scanner later that same day.)

I do appreciate your thoughts!!

I'll come back when I try some of these fixes..

I'm wondering if a "CUPS printer reset" could help; there are several things in
the Mac OS X system which may present you with issues if they somehow
get a little messed up. And I have no idea, with an all-in-one printer, if the
CUPS reset could help this second issue you have with the scan mode.

You could see what your computer's Help search results on the topics
where issues remain, from the help in the main Finder window; or see
if a wider search of any or all articles online (a mixed bag) may help.
Also, Apple Support documents and database are searchable...

There are some reference links in the following results page of a general search.
Looking through to see if one or several could be used in your computer, may be
helpful; if applicable or not close to your needs. There is a chance GutenPrint
(gimp-print) and CUPS may give you some answers. So may system maintenance.

Hopefully this helps some.
