Upgrade 10.3.9 to Tiger on iMac G3?

A friend gave me my iMac, but can't find the booklet for the software with the cd key for Microsoft Office X, so I can't use it. I'm running Panther 10.3.9 and wonder whether I should buy a used disc with Tiger 10.4. Will that have Microsoft Office on it or will I have to buy that and install it too?

iMac G3, Mac OS X (10.3.x)

If you friend did not give you the software key, it may be because he/she is using the software on another computer. Unless there was a multiple user license, the software can only legally be installed on one computer.

If your friend gave you the install disks for Panther, there may be a copy of Apple's word processing software, Appleworks on it, and you can install it from there on your computer, if it is not already installed.

Your other option is to purchase a copy (with software key and license) of MS Word for your use.

Good luck.

a G3 IMac ... probably OSX 10.3.9, that you're currently on, and which I still use today on my MDD.
It does the job. Unless you have some must-have software app that requires Tiger, stick with Panther.

Or if you're technically gifted you could try a slightly older version of one of the Linux flavours. I think I tried OpenBSD v3, YEARS ago on my G3 iMac, it was insanely fast and very, very slick.

Ok. I'm not a high-end user. Here are the issues I'm trying to solve. I'm "locked out" of Microsoft Office X because I don't have the cd key and my friend can't find his install disk and booklet. I can't use I tunes because I can't go to a higher version of Safari due to my OS (tried to upgrade Safari and that's the message I got) I tried to fill out an online application for something and it said that I had to have Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher (I have 5.2.3) I downloaded OpenOffice 2.4 , but it says I can't use it until I install Apple x11 (but remember, I don't have the install disk) Oh, and that creating world peace thing...... I of course just want the easiest and cheapest fix.....

I don't have the install disk

I suggest that you contact your friend and ask for the install disks for Panther. If your friend is still running Panther, then it is a violation of the Apple Software License Agreement to have it running on more than one computer; if your friend is no longer running Panther, then there is no good reason why you should not have the disks. Incidentally, the same goes for Word or Office: Mac. As you are finding out, having the install disk is very important. I suggest that if you are not able to get the install disk from your friend you consider purchasing the Full Retail Version of either Panther or Tiger.

Cheers 🙂

I had the same problem with some online forms using Internet Explorer. From my research, Internet Explorer stopped creating updates for the Mac some time ago. They have only made the upgrades for the PC, likely because most Mac users are using Safari. But Safari is also not compatible with some online interfaces, so I recommend you do as I did and upgrade to Firefox. I have not had any problems with Firefox. You should be able to fill out your application. If your system does not support Firefox, download another browser, like Netscape Navigator. Regarding your OS, I'm still trying to get the same answers you are regarding the best way to upgrade. I posted in another Thread on the same subject. Best of luck!

Thanks Roam... I hate to be redundant, as I already posted in the thread. Upon further looking, I found a very detailed reply from Ali B (or ali brown) to another users similar question . Unfortunately, I'm new to forums and can't quite navigate you there, but a search of "ali brown" should help to narrow it down and the subject is similar re: upgrading. I found it particularly informative. Now to find out if my Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS (not CS2 or CS3) will work on both Tiger and Leopard so I can decide which OS to upgrade to? (I am also still wondering if Leopard would even be worthy with my minimal specs.) Unfortunately, I already asked these questions in another thread instead of posting my own topic. Wish I got your note sooner! If you know the CS answer or have Leopard opinions on my system, please respond. Otherwise I will wait or try a topic next time! Thanks ( :

Sorry, why upgrade the OS ?

Less and less older software works, more and more newer software works.
And SO many things stopped working in Leopard.

Even then, why upgrade to Tiger ? What benefit does it give you over Panther ?

Photoshop CS compatibility with Leopard ? You'll need to check out the Adobe forums:

http://www.adobeforums.com/

By all accounts, most things work, although there are some issues. By searching the fiorums you can find the methods used to circumvent the issues, but there will be no help from Adobe.

Thanks Simon,

Well I want to upgrade the OS now because I waited for the iPhone 3G, finally bought it, and then came home to find out it doesn't work with my operating system! It's frustrating that all the new stuff is working less and less with my computer and yet, all my older programs won't work with the new OS. It has left me in a crux because in order to upgrade I have to buy everything new (computer, programs, etc.). I've spent hours upon hours researching and being frustrated and spent a lot of money already (on my not-so-old computer system alone!). My mac also has worked perfectly, so I don't really want to spend even more on a new system just yet. But I would like to be able to purchase some new and different softwares than what I currently have and I would like to be able to use my new iPhone (which incidentally, I wanted for internet capability as I need it remotely often). I just hope subsequent OS transitions are smoother, as if it keeps up like this, Apple may lose some very loyal customers for the pure fact that we can't keep up monetarily.

Ouch. I was in the same boat with my iPod Touch. Bought after ordering my Mac Pro.

Boy, was I miffed to discover:
I needed OSX 10.4.11 to get music onto it - which I fortunately have on another MDD internal disk. Still a pain to have to reboot just to load up video and music.
And that it wouldn't sync over FireWire. You only get power over FireWire, sync is only over USB, of which my MDD had an abundance of USB v1 ports.

So I had to do some nifty fiddling with my PBG4 (OSX 10.3.9 also but USBv2) and an external firewire drive, used for backups partitioned and OSX 10.4 installed and updated). I was not happy.

But my Mac Pro arrived three weeks later (I only synced the once with about 10Gb of music) and it's been a breeze ever since - but again I only sync about once a month.
