Can't Exit Full Screen Mode in X11

I suceeded at getting X11 to go into full screen mode and now everytime I launch the application, all I see is a gray plaid pattern over the whole screen with no access to any controls. How can I access the preferences to turn off that feature?

Power Mac G5, Mac OS X (10.4.11), MacBookPro

When X11 is running, CMD+comma (,) should open Prefs.
