Thunderbird Sync with iPhone

Hi

I know that at the present time we cannot sync our email with the iPhone 3G but is this something that Apple is working on and something that we can expect in the future?

There are a lot of users of Thunderbird out there and it would be great if we could have the ability to sync it with our iPhones.

Thank You!

I use T'Bird and have imported addresses to iPhone.

For me syncing is not necessary. My approach is:

o Grab msgs when out and around with iPhone; leave them on the server
o Read them again with MacBook and remove them from server; keep them all in MacBook.

I have no interest in having all my stored email accessible on the iPhone. If I had such a desire I'd look into MobileMe.

I have been working on Address Book Server for some time now which allows you to sync your OS X Address Book with other Macs. An native iPhone client is almost complete (still waiting for Apple's approval). I was planning on doing a TB client for the server in the future

Address Book Server is pretty open with the protocols it uses, even though it is not open-source. Maybe you could get a number of TB users together and we could work on a client as a joint effort.

I have been able to sync Thunderbird and iPhone contacts very well. Heres how I do it:

1) Set up a free account at my.funambol.com. This account will be used as a "go between" between T-bird and the iPhone.

2) Download the T-bird extention for MyFunabol here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/8616

3) In iTunes or from the iPhone download the funabol iphone app at: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=284457844&mt=8

Once everything is set up, you can use the T-bird add on to sync the T-bird address book to funabol, and then use the iphone app to synce your iphone to the same funabol account. It works very well. A couple of mapping notes:

T-bird "email" field = iPhone "other" email field
T-bird "additional email" field = iphone "home" email field

Hey Jumpin...

Do you want to sync mail or do you want to sync address books?

Mail syncing (actual messages) is best done with an Imap mail server.
So if you have a choice of how you talk to your mail server (pop vs Imap)
go the imap way every time. (Google mail and yahoo mail are great for this).
So Mail syncing is best done on the server side.

If you want to sync Address books, thats a bit messier. Well, actually a lot messier, because you have to export the Thunderbird Address book and find a way to import it into iphone, or windows contacts. I haven't found a good solution yet. Its a bit of a mess, but supposed to be fixed in Thunderbird 3. (Don't go there, its horribly broken at this point).

Syncing Thunderbird contacts with iPhone:
- Download and install the Zindus extension for Thunderbird, and sync Thunderbird contacts with Google Contacts
- In iTunes, select the iPhone device, and under Info "sync contacts with Google Contacts"

You can have Zindus sync with Google automatically on a regular basis, or manually sync by selecting Tools>Zindus>Sync Now in Thunderbird.

(if you want to replace iPhone contacts entirely with your Thunderbird contacts on the first sync, in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences> and find the tab with the option to reset Sync history. Then click on the iPhone device in iTunes, and under "Info" select the "Replace information on this iPhone" "Contacts" tab.)

Itried funambol. It syncs contacts from iCal; not from Thunderbird.
And when trying to launch sync from Thunderbird's Funambol plugin, it says :
"Error reading statut code of command 'syncHdr'

thunderbird is an email client that talks to a server - if you are using IMAP in thunderbird - you can set up an email account on the iphone that points to the server - and read your mail on your thunderbird client or the iphone client - changing mail on one client will be reflected on the other

you can also do this if you are using POP - setup and email clent on your iphone pointing at the POP server - the only difference is (unless you have POP set to leave mail on server0 once you download mail onto the iphone its not available to any other POP client

i do this with my work email - i have it setup on myy iphone and also use thunderbird - you can have multiple email accounts on your iphone - of different types - typically unless im traveling i keep my work email turnd off on the iphone synce i can read it from my thunderbird client - at work or at home ( i have 3 email accounts set up on my iphone - IMAP for work, yahoo mail and gmail)

if you have multiple email accounts on the iphone you can set which one you want to be the default for mail sent from applications outside the apple email app -inside the apple email app the mail issent from which ever acount you are usingwhen ou send the mail
