iPhone battery issue - exchange calendar sync the primary suspect

I am having this exact issue. I too use Entourage and have to resort to using mobileme/ical push to get my calendar. I have reset the phone, upgraded to 2.01, but nothing has helped this battery drain problem.

I have all day events, but haven't noticed them swapping. I do notice the bug with iCal that keeps adding holidays over and over, and begins adding multiple events with entourage, but that shouldnt have anything to do with AS OTA. It seems there are several people having this issue around our office, but others have no problems, which leads me to believe it is some server side settings, and some inflexibility with the iphone software...

I just registered for this forum so I could add my name to the list of people who are having trouble with calendar sync to an Exchange server.

If I set up my Exchange account to sync calendars, push or otherwise, my battery dies in 3-4 hours. Also, on the usage screen, my "usage" time is equal to my "standby" time. The phone also gets incredibly hot, even in standby.

All of these symptoms go away if I disable calendar sync and reboot the phone. So, I'm 99% sure it's the calendar sync, too.

Mail and Contacts seem to be working. But, I really need my calendar to work! I sure hope Apple can figure this one out and fix it in the next firmware upgrade...

thanks to this and many other posts I've figured our that my issue was xirecy related to Exhange Calender and push. I've tried removing all of the one day events without luck.

Any word of this yet?

I don't have exchange calendar... but since the last update my battery life stinks too, just awful.

I probably get about 5 calendar requests a day, and I have not had a problem with them relative to battery life.

Others with PUSH Exchange eating the battery have reported that the iPhone is not maintaining a connection waiting for updates but doing a pull/check every few seconds. Many have found a fix, by deleting and then recreating the Exchange account. I am guessing a reboot inbetween would helpful.

I;ve got the same problem, and even when push is turned off it drains my battery.
My battery is empty within 4 hours, when exchange is off it's a lot better, which the
same usage it lasts for 2 days.

what do you mean "when exchange is off"?
Exchange doesn't run on the phone so how do you turn it off?

If push is off the phone falls back to fetch. What is your fetch interval?

Also, when you sync your calendar, how many days is it set to copy?

I KNOW THIS IS lONG, BUT PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ IT.

OK - After about 5 hours of troubleshooting I have FIGURED out why my battery was lasting only 3.5 hours. I hope this helps.

1. completely wiped the phone away and brought it back with push disabled. EVERYTHING FINE
2. I enabled push waited 1 hour. EVERYTHING FINE
3. I enabled mail push syncing. EVERYTHING FINE
4. I enabled contacts push syncing. EVERYTHING FINE
5. I enabled calendar and BAM battery starting spinning in overdrive. The calendar was the issue.
6. I disabled push and to my surprise it did not get better, only after a reboot did the batter return to normal. OK - so I have narrowed it down to the calendar.
7. I am using Outlook 2007 with Exchange 2003.
8. I took a bold step and archived my entire calendar to a pst file so it left nothing in the calendar.
9. Again to my surprise the battery started draining immediately when i enabled the calendar again. On a hunch I checked the properties of the calendar and it said there was a few kb left. I could not do anything to find these.
10. I logged into Outlook web access ( http://exchangeservername/exchange - if enabled) and did a search on the calendar and it found two orphan calendar entires. I deleted them.
11. I enabled calendar syncing again and it went perfect. I then copied back all of my calendar entires from the archive pst to the calendar and luckily no problem.

The push service must have not known how to process these two entires and was just chocking on it. For the last two weeks I have been getting 12-14 hours from a charge with 3-5 hours of use. Farb better then the 3.5 hours with no usage. I hope this helps!!

How did you find the orphaned items? Is there any way to find these without the web interface, such as using exchange directly at your computer?

Really, you should forward this to apple tech support because their code seems a little prone to failure if it can't detect bad data, and just keeps grinding away.
