No sound - silent imac

Hi there,

This problem is really getting me down. My imac has no sound, here are the facts:

I get a chime on start up
There is no sound on any other accounts
In Sys Pref>Sound it reads no output devices found
If I use the volume keys a grey volume bar appears along with a zero symbol

I have run a permissions check etc...
Have not installed anything lately

Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening?

I may try a re-install of 10.5, but looking for a better fix?

Thanks

iMac G5 isight 1.9 PPC 1GBRAM, Mac OS X (10.5.4), IPT 16GB, Nano 4GB

A few things to try:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300832 Mac OS X: No audio from certain multimedia content

Trick/Tip: Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit out of the GarageBand app.

"I have run a permissions check etc..."

Etc mean you also restarted after repairing permissions? Booted from your Leopard DVD & ran the repair disk/permissions option?

This might also be part of the problem:

+Your digital out has been turned on. You will also notice a red light in the hole when this happens. Use a plastic toothpick to reach into the hole and around the 3 o'clock position try flipping the switch. An alternate method that has worked for some people is to plug and unplug the earphones a few times. This sometimes resets the switch.+
