iPhone 3G - Cracks in Plastic Housing

I have been reading a lot of posting indicating cracks in the iPhone 3G plastic housing. I have multiple hairline cracks around my camera and near the volume rocker.

For some reason the thread here (Apple Discussions) has disappeared??? So I opened a new one. Apple must do something about this.

There is another thread at macrumors.com on the same topic: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=525177

I just returned from the local Apple store with a new, +*swapped out*+ white 16g iPhone 3G. My phone had a small crack at the top, left near the phone jack. I just wanted the guy at the Genius bar to note it, but he was up front and told me he'd swap it right then and there. Apple is obviously aware, because he annotated my "repair" ticket with notes concerning how I carried the phone (in a Marware case) and my use of screen film. Oh, and he also replaced my screen film free of charge (even gave me the whole package!).

I have been quite satisfied with Apple service in the past... this just reinofrces how terrific their customer care is. I hope it is uniform at every Apple store.

So I replaced my cracked black 16g iphone 3g yesterday. I originally took it in to "document" the issue on monday. The girl at the genius bar seemed a little frustrated when I told her about my cracks and stated that although I could get a replacement that she didn't see the cracks being a problem and that it was plastic and would probably do this. I wonder, when they say this to customers, if they would say the same thing to a friend or family member who owns a $300 cell phone that is cracked. In any case, because I didn't have box and contents with me I had to make another appointment for Tues. Strangely...the guy that I got Tues told me something very similar to the girl on Mon. He said, It is a mobile device and will probably do that". To that I say....BULLS^%T!!!! I have a panasonic cordless phone whose shiny plastic back looks suspiciously similar to that of my iphone. That phone had been thrown, dropped, kicked and who knows what else. Is it scratched up...yup...is it cracked...nope. I say this to iterate the fact that Apple could have chosen a different type of plastic for their phone. So far my replacement phone has no cracks out of box. You best believe I'll keep checking for them.

Yes, they just swapped mine out for a new one, and asked the same questions...They are definitely doing the right thing, so if you are unhappy at least find comfort that they are replacing them.

Although my phone was pristine otherwise(no scratches dents, etc...)

I did notice on the new one, the space between the headphone port and the chrome is like a millimeter thin piece of plastic and looks almost indented, so I can only hope it will be ok...

They did say that the return policy is 14 days not 30 for the phones only 30 for att contract...but they replaced it under warranty...

I however had to buy new screen protectors... :-P

1. Apple is aware of (crack) problem.
2. Apple is still trying to find the cause of cracks.
3. Apple does not repair cracked iPhones - they replace them - with another potential "time bomb".
4. The "standard" questionnaire is in place for cracked iPhones replacement.
5. Cracks affect all iPhones irrespectively of color, production week and manufacturing factory.
Where will it end...?!

I noticed one hairline crack coming from the headphone jack on my 8 gig black coming fromt he rear of the headphone jack and 3 on my buddies white 16 gig around the camera. I called applecare and they were totally helpful. They offered to replace it or for me to talk to a "genius" and have them replace it. I got a case number and told her that I would have it replaced when they figured out what was up. She told me that was fine and thanked me for reporting it. LESSON HERE: report the problem so that it gets fixed. They seem to be aware and from someone who works for an international electronics manufacturer ...we can't solve problems till we have metrics on what is up...that is what they need. So boys and girls be nice, report the problem calmly, and get taken care of.
