iPhone 3G - Cracks in Plastic Housing

I have been reading a lot of posting indicating cracks in the iPhone 3G plastic housing. I have multiple hairline cracks around my camera and near the volume rocker.

For some reason the thread here (Apple Discussions) has disappeared??? So I opened a new one. Apple must do something about this.

There is another thread at macrumors.com on the same topic: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=525177

I didnt buy it it was a exchange for the white one that had cracks in it. But yes it was brand new in the original box. Apple is aware of the screw ups with the phone. I think this new batch of phones that the stores have been getting are alot better. Like i said it runs alot faster. Not lagging in between screens like the last two that I had. I just hated that I had to get black but oh well just as long as my $533 phone works. LOL

I had a cover on my phone since the day I had purchased it. the cracks that everyone is talking about are actually below the surface. I was told that this is a known issue. if it was something that Apple felt we were doing they wouldnt be so quick to give a new phone out. Now probably there are people that have dropped their phones and are tryn to get over but then there are people like me who hadnt. Dont be so insensitive!

I think right now the chances are you will receive a new phone. Though, some have reported getting a remanufactured phone.

There is only one way to know if you got a new phone (aside from seeing them take it out of a brand new box, which I don't think they do). You would need to call Apple and give them the serial number. They could tell you then if it was new or remanufactured

no offense taken...I usually think people saying they are on there 3+phones are picky too, but these were all bad defects, confirmed with the geniuses...They either had a bad stock the store or I was unlucky...

I accepted my current one, which cam with a dimple in the back plastic, light leak and dust... It works great, but they better replace it if these things develop into major problems...

i.e. light leak lets moisture, dust in causing problems dimple in plastic develops into larger crack that causes structural issues...

And as far as the environmental concern, all the phones were given back to apple, as I am sure will be refurbed, and were already produced prior to me getting them, so I can't take responsibility for that because I got defective models...I shouldn't even have to say this.

I know many people's phones are fine and I am happy for them, but for the many people that are unhappy with the defects, let apple know, they seem to be acknowledging them case by case...

I've got cracks in my white phone as others have stated. I've held off taking it into the store mainly because I can live with it for now. But, I do want it fixed eventually because one seems to be growing. My question is when it'll be worked out, though. I don't want to go through the hassle of getting a new one and then it develop cracks. Should I wait a little longer (but I really don't know how long because it's not like Apple will acknowledge it is fixed because then they'd have to acknowledge it's a problem) or just go ahead and try and get it replaced?

I would get it replaced while they are replacing them...just make sure you really look over the replacement as many of the ones I was offered had other issues(stuck pixels, not sealed, dust under screen, cosmetic defects)

Mine is currently crack free, but it also isn't as old as when I noticed the cracks on the original.

You should be able to fully enjoy a new toy! Not settle for defects...

Some say their phones from launch are fine, so it may not be a universal flaw. Although, many use them under different characteristics(I.e cases, heat, humidity, usage, etc). So it is possible they will eventually develop the cracks, but I am hoping it was a batch issue and not a design flaw.

Good luck.
