iPhone 3G - Cracks in Plastic Housing

I have been reading a lot of posting indicating cracks in the iPhone 3G plastic housing. I have multiple hairline cracks around my camera and near the volume rocker.

For some reason the thread here (Apple Discussions) has disappeared??? So I opened a new one. Apple must do something about this.

There is another thread at macrumors.com on the same topic: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=525177

I can't see any cracks on my black one when I hold it under a bright light. Just how visible were they? I sound paranoid, but I wonder if there's any special light that you have to use. I used a flashlight, too, but couldn't see anything. Incidentally, when I went to the Apple store, I looked at all the phones on display and didn't see any cracks, and those phones are handled all day by hundreds of people. I think it's almost better to find a crack now because they are more likely to exchange your phone since you haven't had it very long. I wonder what they will say if someone doesn't remove their case for a few months and then discovers cracks??

Perhaps people should post their serial number/ build week against each post, this may give Apple an indication as to which batches are affected or if it's a wider spread issue.

However, judging from the forums on the other Apple rumour sites, this is a big issue and people are getting a little p*ssed off at Apple's lack of movement or acknowledgement. Wait until the paper's get hold of this story.....

Cracks on iPhones appear irrespectively of the week of production 25,26,27,28,29,30,etc;
There is also no link to the factory - first 2 digits. I am sorry to say, but they just happen.
I have also noticed that a lot (if not the most) of iPhones have cracks - out of the box (brand new).
As far as: "some cases is causing a "reaction" in the plastic used in the iPhone?"
All I can say to that statement/question is: You can't be serious...

I went and checked the display model iPhone 3Gs at my local AT&T store this weekend. Two out of the three had cracks near the headphone jack very similar to my iPhone. One of them was week 27 like mine and the other was bricked so I couldn't check. I would guess it was the same week since the display models and my iPhone came from the same shipment.

I posted previously about a tiny crack by the volume rocker on the now dead thread and wanted to update.

Went to apple on Thursday and they have my replacement in today. Just looked at my phone again and I have one additional crack between the headphone jack and bezel, one by the SIM card slot two by the sleep button and 5 other small cracks on the side of the phone with no buttons. Apple gave me no hassel about the exchange but they did claim that no one else in Austin had come in about this issue. Phone has never been dropped and been handled with care. I hope that apple will get to the bottom of this and do right by their customers. Hopefully the new one will be better...but some how I doubt it. But I will make sure to report any cracks on the new phone so I will have a case number filed with them. Hopefully that will give me a leg to stand on and make replacement when the problem is resolved easier.

As for serial/factor/week info, factor 88 week 29 white 16g iphone 3g.
