Sit back enjoy the phone and know that Apple's reputation is on the line as any manufacturers would be on a hot item like the iPhone. Apple is probably investigating the root cause of the issue and in communication with the suppliers of the back case, manufacturing of the back case was probably outsourced. Apple needs to investigate and executives would need to discuss a plan to resolve this issue before they come out and say anything, let Apple do it's thing. I have faith that they are not going to ignore this issue, it is too serious for them to do that and would destroy their reputation and hurt business which they do not want.

I can see Apple and whoever they contracted out the manufacturing of the back case in a heated discussion on who is going to cover the cost of the exchanges/repairs and Apple execs discussing the costs of exchanging or repairing all these units and which would be the proper way to go.

Another thing, we as well as Apple probably aren't even sure if this was just a bad batch when the plastic was mixed, not formed at the right temperature, etc... I would imagine they do not just want to say whoever has an issue please call us for replacement. They want to KNOW which phones were affected and be proactive by also eplacing them before the issue appears.

I've got quite a few cracks also...but i don't want to have to drive into the city to get it replaced...that'll be about 2 hours to go 45 miles, what should i do?

Plus getting a new one doesn't mean the problem is solved. It means you very well might get one with the same issue.

You don't have to drive anywhere.

Give AppleCare a call at (800) 694-7466 instead to handle everything over the phone.

yea im pretty sure apple is going to have to fix this problem and all the messed up iphones...ijust don't feel safe unless apple comes out with a statement. And btw i really don't think getting a replacement will help as most people who check their iphones...old and new..have the same problem. At least so far.

Yes and nobody knows when they cvome with a statement, so I hope they fix the problem soon. Don't wanna return my iPhone every other day if you know what I mean.

Yea, my white iPhone has 1 crack that I can confirm on the corner of the phone nearest the headphone jack (that I've never used).

There are also two potential cracks next to the volume buttons. I'll have to inspect in better lighting to verify.

My friend txt'd me and asked if I had any cracks like his, and I said no. Upon further inspection, I sure did...

No 3G reception, can't make 3 way calls to save my life, cracked case, Activation ****, MobileMe disaster, 2.0 Firmware buggy as Windows ME... Wow, did I buy an Apple product, or something from Microsoft?

to fix your 3-way calling, here's what I had to do. Call AT&T and get to apple iPhone support, tell them your call merging is not working. Tell them you read about he problem online and the cause is that AT&T does not have it activated on your account. They will call AT&T and get them to fix it. DO NOT call AT&T account support yourself, they won't understand what to do and it won't get fixed.

Amen to that AT&T has no clue. Took them a week to get my visual voicemail working.

I would not take it!! Part of the selling point of Apples products is cosmetics. That is some of the reason we all put up the BIG BUCKS for Apple products.
  • dcdttu Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)
I'll give that a try. Hopefully they won't play dumb about it like they have when I call about the reception issues and the cracked case...

I just got my iPhone 3g yesterday and I also have a hair line crack I'm going back to the AT&T store to see what he tells me

AT&T does not handle any iPhone repairs or exchanges under warranty.

I was posting on a similar topic yesterday. I saved the link - it's been DELETED. What the heck.

Anyway - I have a black 8 gig iPhone 3G with 10 cracks - all around the headphone jack and buttons.

I wrote a post about my experience with Apple and AT&T regarding this issue so far that you can read here http://adamsentz.com/?p=29
