Ipod nano Not detected in my computer or itunes

Okay, first off, I have tried several different things to correct this issue, and NOTHING has become remotely helpful.

My computer doesn't even make the little "ding" sound that I get with all my other usb devices upon plug in. The ipod will be charging and nothing else, nothing in device manager, my computer, itunes and wherever else it is at. The Ipod was given to my by a friend who moved away a few weeks ago, and I finally got the charger yesterday. The ipod can play songs and what-have-you but will not connect to the computer in anyway but to charge. Resetting does NOT work, I repeat, it does NOT work.
I cannot restore it as it doesn't even get detected by anything on the computer. The cord is NEW so it is not that, all the usb ports WORK so it couldn't be that, and it is not my computer as I tried on a laptop and another desktop. I refuse to send it in for repairs as I do not wish to spend money on something I haven't even got to use, and would be extremely upset to get it sent back saying it's faulty. :/
Oh and itunes is the latest version.

READ THE WHOLE THING BEFORE OFFERING HELP.
I will not read anything mentioning resetting, ports, computers, cable and all the stuff I have ALREADY tried.

Since you have not described EVERYTHING you may have tried, you should detail EVERY step you have taken, including links to the articles and troubleshooting steps you have completed.
Also, you need to give a complete detailed description of your hardware and software/OS.

Good luck!

How can I give a detailed description of everything...
I have tried resetting, switching usbs, different computers, the cable is brand new.
I have checked the device manager, my computer, itunes and another 3rd party program for the ipod, nothing shows up.
The Ipod was not originally mine, but I do not know the address that my friend moved too, nor their new number, however they did give the ipod to me.
I have tried resetting my computer and reinstalling itunes, neither worked.
The ipod is obviously on a working cable if it can charge form the usb.
I cannot try the last R (restore) of Ipod troubleshooting as it has to interact with itunes.
I am not going to pay to have it repaired, it will probably come back as faulty and they will force me to pay too much for a new one.
My operating system is windows XP service pack three, and yes the ipod is made for windows. All of the usb ports are in working order, I tested this.
The computer is only 6 months old so it's not a compatibility issue.

Also the ipod will not enter disk mode or disk scan mode after I reset it and press the corresponding buttons.

PS there is no sad face ipod icon either. >_>

Well, you wrote you would not read any posts if you have already tried something so anyone responding would need to know exactly what you have tried.

Have you restarted the *iPod Service*?
"1- Quit iTunes.
2 - Right click on My Computer/Computer and click Manage. If Windows requires your permission to continue, click Continue.
3 - Click the plus symbol to the left of Services and Applications.
4 - Select Services listed under Services and Applications.
5 - Double click iPod Service in the right hand panel.
6 - Click the Stop button under the General tab and leave the iPod Service Properties window open.
7 - Connect your iPod and wait until it is visible in My Computer/Computer.
8 - Click the Start button in the iPod Service Properties window.
9 - Open iTunes."

Check your registry keys -> A computer that is running Windows XP cannot detect a USB thumb drive, an Apple iPod, or an external hard disk drive

The ipod is obviously on a working cable if it can charge form the usb.

Not necessarily.
A USB cable has 4 pins, 2 for power and 2 for communications/data transfer.
Don't even need the 2 comm lines for it to charge.

they will force me to pay too much for a new one.

They won't "force" you to do anything.

I, too, am having the same connectivity issues and have tried what was suggested within this discussion, to no avail. My computer doesn't recognize my J drive when I plug in my iPod, though it is charging. Do cables just go bad? can they bang against something "just right" to jar something? The weird thing is that it worked about a week ago when I created new playlist, as I was able to sync them to my iPod. Then, a couple days later the computer could not detect that my iPod was even connected. Does anyone have another option I should try before I purchase another cable? Thank you so much!

well, don't bother with a cable, I haven't seen anyone say that that solved the problem yet....I have similar problems with a nano 1G-In addition to being seen by the PC as an "unknown device", it won't play songs....it says it is playing, but the time elapsed never changes. When the battery gets very low, then my PC and I-tunes recognizes it, and starts to restore, but then gives error 1437 & 1418.I am quite sure the problem is in the i-pod, and have seen many others with the same symptoms, so apple is aware of it. They need to start replacing these if they don't have a fix. Mine is less than a year old......If anyone gets any info, post it, and I will do the same...

I too have this problem, but my Ipod instead of charging only charges for 15 minutes then stops. but is still not recognized by the computer or Itunes. I have tried the 5R's, and resetting the Ipod Service, restarting the computer, reinstalling Itunes. and nada. I can't add or delete songs from the Ipod because the computer won't recognize the Ipod. I have even tried plugging the Ipod into 2 other computers and its the same thing. which points to it being the Ipod. as we speak the computer has just recognized the Ipod as an unknown device. When you click this message it says that one or more of the devices in the usb ports cannot be recognized please restart the computer and if this doesn't work then replace the device. I think thats what I'm gonna have to do get another Ipod and if that one breaks. lets just say the people at apple is going to have a nice phone call.
