What constitutes a $45 Enterprise Data Plan

I have a 1st generation iPhone and have it connected to my Exchange server at work. It works great and unless I'm going to get a big surprise in my bill next month, I don't pay extra for this service and was able to connect it myself.

A friend is wanting to get the new 3G iPhone (personal line) and was told by AT&T that he would have to get the Enterprise data plan at $45 a month if he wanted to connect to our Exchange server.

We called AT&T today and the first guy we talked to said if you have a personal line there is no additional charge, even if you connect to your Exchange server. The second guy we talked to said anyone with a 3G iPhone that wants to connect to an Exchange server will have to be on a corporate plan and pay for the enterprise data plan @ $45 month. He said the software on the 3G phone will not let you set up an Exchange connection unless you pay for the $45 plan.

I tend to believe the first guy is telling the truth and the second guy didn't understand, but thought I would ask here to see if anyone has access to their work Exchange server with a 3G iPhone and is not being charged the $45/month data plan.

That is complete and utter nonsense. I do not and cannot have an enterprise plan since that would require my company to get my cell phone bill. They do not offer this. And yet I was (within about 10 minutes after activating) easily able to add exchange information to my iPhone and I have confirmed multiple times with AT&T that I am on the 3 dollar unlimited plan. This is no different then using a Windows mobile phone like my father does (that phone is on a family plan that does not qualify for an enterprise plan either). AT&T is assuming that you have a business plan with your work when they are talking about activeSync services.

Just repeating what has already been said in case anyone needs more assurance.
Exchange can be used with any data plan. $30 and $45 are identical and differ only in price. Personal accounts can have the $30 plan. When your account is a business account or your bill is paid by a business, then they'll require the $45.
It's just up to what corporate reps will required you to get.
You won't be billed for any excessive charges (if you are it's a billing error.)

AT&T says $45 for enterprise email. They do not say $45 for Exchange email.
Regardless they suggest that their enterprise mail solution is Exchange, the two are not mutually exclusive. Exchange is also for personal use.

FAN = (Business) Foundation Account Number.
Eligible companies, organizations, and government bodies each have a FAN number. If you work for or belong to one that participates, you can have the FAN code added to your personal account. The FAN code then entitles you to all of the benefits or discounts, and they vary from FAN to FAN.
It used to mean special discounts and early upgrades on phones in addition to discounts on accessories as well as your service.
But most the phone discounts were dissolved just after the most recent AT&T merger leaving only accessory discount (only some FANs) and service discounts (on most.) Service discounts range from 3% to 28% (as far as I know.) And some have special benefits like no activation fee, 1 year contracts, and special free or discounted devices.

To see if you qualify for a FAN, simply enter your work, school, or government email here:
http://www.wireless.att.com/business/authenticate/

You also get access to a special "premiere" site which is just a web store that applies your discounts. They also offer refurbs on Premiere at times that you don't see on the normal web site.

Once you have a FAN on your account, it's listed in the top right corner of your log in page on OLAM (Online account manager.) When you call customer service you're routed to business customer care.
It also prevents you from buying phones at the Apple store, apparently. LOL

In retrospect I should have just ordered my iPhone off of the premiere site on 7/11 with overnight shipping. I'd have had it on Monday according to what some others said they did.
